foxxy
Hey guys, so I decided to smoke a bowl of AF watermelon which I had opened about 2-3 months ago and never used since. I noticed it smelt kinda different almost smelling like some sort of pungent medicine, (whatever it smelt off, it definitely wasnt watermelon) I just ignored it though and hoped it would at least taste OK....man was I wrong, it tasted exactly like it smelt - some sort of pungent medicine. Has this stuff gone off or something? I keep most of my shisha in the Mya carry case I got with my Vortex and just leave it on the top of my shelf. I have noticed that my tub of Golden Esk. Apple is starting to smell the same, but i've only smoked that once and don't know what its meant to smell of. Any ideas? Thanks
mattarios2
There has been some reports of the watermelon starting to become "messed up" if you will. I had gotten 2 batches of AF Watermelon and they were both bad, they were recently produced, Aug of 08. There are a few other flavors causing issues for some, AF Esk. was not one of them.I guess when you look at it in perspective most people smoke AF so you are more likely to see more people complain about flavors being "off" and on the other side, a company should never produce "bad" batches. Some say it is in our heads, but I experienced it and know that I got bad batches that were disgusting.I'd say let it sit out for 6 hours or so and try again, if still nasty, toss it. Zinite
I bought an August '08 Grape that had the same ketchupy-rancid smell to it. It's definitely not in our heads.
mushrat
QUOTE (Zinite @ Jan 2 2009, 11:58 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>I bought an August '08 Grape that had the same ketchupy-rancid smell to it. It's definitely not in our heads. The grape is a matter of individual perception. I've experimented by having mutiple customers smell the same tub of grape and half said ketchup half said it smelled like grape to them. So that's the answer to the Grape issue. Thats not saying it doesnt smell like ketchup, its just that it only smells that way to some people. As for the other Af's. Ive had a few tubs go bad (changed smell and taste to something boarderign on chemical shit) at the bar. My AF mango went bad in about a month and some of the 50g packs ive checked have also got a nasty smell to them. Then again, I've had similar problems with AA Chocolait mint among others. I think the industry as a whole just lacks any serious Quality control tied with the miriad ways soemthing can happen in shipping. Getting to hot, too cold, who the heck knows. So i assume we are going to get occasional bad batches from every company and it's just somethign we'll have to learn to deal with until somethign is improved on the manufacturing, shipping, and storage aspects. mattarios2
Yeah that makes sense, I just get annoyed when people on here call "us" (us being the people who have complained about AF) crazy or "it's all in your heads deal" There def has been bad batches floating around, h/e it happened who knows, but bad batches of AF do exist. Codename067
Still no bad batches for me.
ambuletzd2h
I still havent had a bad batch yet. I think I've been extremely lucky though if there is alot floating around lately. I agree with mush though with the whole shipping concern, becuase I've had boxes of shisha come pretty banged up and who knows with the weather because that could be a problem as well. Kathrynx
I'd say keep your shisha in air tight containers, and if you are already doing that, I hope "acclimating" the stuff would help the funky-ness.
mattarios2
for some of the grape the acclimating worked, for some of the grape acclimating didn't work, and for the watermelon and mint, acclimating didn't work at all.
vin13
I've recently bought about 10x 250g boxes of mint along with watermelon and the new chocolate and haven't tasted anything out of the ordinary. In the past I did order quite a few 50g samples of their other flavors and some seemed to go bad pretty quickly. I'll stick to my WaterMint for now. mushrat
I jsut have more chances to get bad boxes, seeing as I use a lot here at the bar. Statistically speaking....
foxxy
Hmm, guess I just got a bad batch of watermelon then , shame, its one of my favs. Any ideas on the Golden Eskandari Apple though? Mine's quite dry (well, maybe not dry but no where near as wet as other AF's) and it doesnt have the reddish dye that other AF's have, is this normal? It kinda smells like apple but not much flavour when I smoke it, any special thing i'm supposed to do with it? Because other AF's seem to smoke fine. newjacksm
Chocolate and Vanillia boxes are delicious, both have red dye in it though and chocolate is still the same cut.. so who ever said it has no red dye and has old cut lied...

newjacksm
The AF chocolate has so much Glycerin that it has much less shisha then the rest of the AF i have recived with lesser glycerin it kinda made me really mad.
rigor
I've recently had 2 bad tubs of AF, that had chemical-y or plastic-y type of smells. I tried acclimating for a couple days, stirring whenever I thought of it. Didn't help. Had to toss a tub of AF Peach and AF Watermelon. I've had both several times before. These were definitely bad tubs. Production was either spring or summer '08.

MechAnt
I have yet to get a bad batch of AF. I've had AF ranging in production year from 2006 through 2008. All of them amazingly awesome. I just got a shipment in today from Nazar, Grape, Mint, Peach. All of them amazing. Smoking some grape mint right now.I guess some of us get unlucky or bodies just don't like the smell of them. mattarios2
for me it wasn't the smell, they all smelled fine, but they were so strong in flavor especially the mint, that it was not smokeable, literally burned your throat sooo bad, worse than when tangiers rips harsh, trust me if you get bad batches, you will know. And I have smoked Af mint/watermelon/and others many times to know that it wasn't the way it was in my previous smokes. ToncSTAR
QUOTE (Codename067 @ Jan 2 2009, 09:26 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Still no bad batches for me.you were one of the lucky ones, my friend.i have had 2 bad tubs of AF watermelon, 1 bad tub of AF Cherry, and 1 ok but not regular tasting/smelling AF strawberry. They all had a sour smell to them, and when smoked tickled/stung my throat. Its not in our heads, all five of us who were smoking had that feeling. BUT THERE IS A SOLUTION TO THIS MY FRIENDS! Its going to cost a little, and may seem weird, but eat something a little spicy while smoking these flavors! What we usually have are the "Flaming Hot" Cheetos, or Spicy pork rinds, or spicy french fry chips. It kind of tones the stingy feeling down a little, to a point where it is smokable. Sure you have a watermelon-hot cheeto tasting flavor in your mouth, but hey, you wont have to throw away your shisha now Edited January 3, 2009 by ToncSTAR
MechAnt
Harshness is never really a problem for me since I do smoke cigarettes, but I understand what you mean by the overwhelming flavor.Personally, I like flavors that are very strong and in your face. Some don't. That may be why some prefer brands other than AF.
mattarios2
yeah that is why I have been digging fusion lately, because the flavors are nice and subtle, at least the ones I have tried and liked. i got sick of AF way too fast with that incredibly strong flavor. Only one I can still tolerate is grenadine and a couple others.
