jfaltous
QUOTE (Zyram @ Jan 25 2009, 11:16 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>When I first heard of folks trying to create these things, I had an idea that I never saw there. We all know the coal heats up when we take a puff, because the airflow increases etc, and that's the real drawback to these electric ideas. What if you had an attachment that was a wire along the hose onto the mouthpiece, with a button on it. When you take a pull, you hit the button and it heats the element up to the coal temp when puffing normally? Then, when you let off the button, it goes back to the idle temperature of the coals? It would be a little bit more of a hassle to set up, seeing that you'd have to run a cord along your hose etc, but, at the same time, no coals is no ash and easier cleanup. Just a thought to anyone who's still considering working on these.-ZIf you look closely at it, it seems that they've taken that into account. I may be mistaken, but what it appears they do (based on the description & pictures) is have a heating element inside the device that reaches a temperature of 450-520 degrees (Celsius), however the surface of it only reaches 80-100 degrees. IIRC, standard hookah charcoals burn at around 100 degrees. Looking at the pictures, it seems that the device is covered with vents that pull air through the heating element and down to the bowl surface... so really, this would emulate a real piece of charcoal on the bowl. The heating element would theoretically be far enough away from the bowl itself to be burning up the shisha between puffs, but would raise the temperature at the surface during any increased airflow. My concern with those would be on the size... it seems that at 42mm they're large enough to cover a small bowl entirely (which looks like what they're designed for), which would be the equivalent of a pretty big chunk of charcoal. If there's some sort of control mechanism to affect how much heat actually gets transferred, then it could work quite well with any standard bowl but would require a completely different design for a phunnel. Without any control mechanism on the other hand, it would be a pain on heat management unless you matched it to a perfect bowl size and a specific brand of shisha... however as someone mentioned before, if it operates on DC then it could be an easy enough mod, but truth be told I personally don't know enough about electronics nor how the device functions to assume life is ever that easy Also, it's interesting that they have 10 different model listings on that site for the device, and the only aspect that changes between them is the color. Even then, they only have 4 colors or so... I wonder if maybe someone got lazy in posting the details and in fact there are different sizes to these...?
