Diffuser Video!

if you want a diffuser, do you want it for Mya or Stargate first?

heres a vid I made to compare my stargate without diffuser, versus with
diffuser installed. the diffuser i just put in it took me a whole 10
minutes to make, from a 1/2" brass tube section and an aluminum widget
which happened to press in real nicely into the end, with 6 large holes
in it. fits perfectly into the stem of my stargate with no o-ring.

in the video, i hold my finger over the top of the stem and slowly pull
it back as I go, to simulate different levels of bowl related drag
(differs according to how you pack the bowl and punch the foil), then i
take a couple fully open hits, i do this for both.

this diffuser is a high flowing one by the way, you could also make a
diffuser with less flow and more diffusing, but i think the high
flowing kind works best (breaks the smoke up in the water, but doesnt
make the hit harder). without the diffuser, of course you notice its
not going through much water (cant go much deeper with the stargate or
you risk water up the hose). besides that, its only really splashing
the water around on the surface, because the air comes out in one big
blast it tends to kick the water up a lot. with the diffuser in,
besides the fact its going through a lot more water, it also breaks it
up more evenly, tossing the water up less, and IMO it sounds way cooler
too. doesnt make the hit any harder either, which is really nice.

thought you might all like to see that, once my new diffusers are
ready, i will have another video. speaking of those diffusers, we need
to decide something right now: MYA or STARGATE FIRST? please vote in the poll, the more popular choice will have a diffuser first.

you can definitely use a lot of small holes as opposed to a few large ones without impacting the draw.  and when you do it that way, the hits are far smoother, as the bubbles sort of "fizz".  it's like taking a weird breath of super concentrated flavored air.  certainly not hard to draw, in fact it seems easier in  a way, as though the hit is lighter.

breaking the smoke up into too many small bubbles actually weakens the flavor and smoke thickness, so its ideal to instead break it into 8-12 holes going downwards and outwards to use the waters cooling to the most efficiency without completely draining the flavor and thickness of the smoke. the other less obvious improvement of an adjustable length (telescopic) diffuser is making the most use of the water depth, by ensuring the stem is right to the bottom of the base.estimated cost is 30 USD, poll is tied, get some more votes in there! if these diffusers sell like hotcakes I'll consider a CNC run later, but I do have my hands full with paintball related work right now.

also a few things to add, and some more specific replies:pav- for the actual water depth of the stem, diffusing the flow makes it quieter, it seems louder in the movie because it actually extends the depth considerably, over an inch deeper stem actually.dizzing- tradeoff on the noise, as i mentioned above there is a sweet spot between no diffusing and too much, and personally i do like my hookah to make some noise.yash- the diffuser in there was just a quick home brew design, 6 hole with very little radial (outwards) extension, but it works like a charm. I'll get you guys a nice picture when I run off a few of these, theyre going to be done manually initially so I've no problem making a few (5 or so) to begin with, then more as I go, and if demand begs the need I'll do a CNC run of many more.
