Fishdog I am much obliged to you for your pen-cap diffuser idea.  I made two different versions of your invention yesterday and tested them out later in the evening.  I was kind of skeptical of what the results would be, but I've been smoking hookah for 2 years and the cooling and smoothness that such a simple device offered was stunning.  I wouldn't mind getting a pro-made diffuser for a complete seal and asethic reasons, but from now on my pen-caps stay on my stems.
I used about 8 not-too-small holes on one of them and about 14 very-mini holes on the other.  Both offered very acceptable draws, but the 8-hole version just suited my fancy a bit more because the sound was more traditional and perhaps had a little bit better draw.  Wish I had a digital camera to take pics.
Interesting result: the vase water after only a small bowl of ma'assel was extremely dirty and discolored.  Usually that kind of water discoloration only happens after I use a large bowl and have a hour-plus session.

  • 2 months later...
I made a diffuser about 3 weeks ago. I just got a thimble out of my grandma's sewing kit that she didnt use and drilled about 8-10 1/16" diameter holes and a bowl grommet for sealant and it worked very nicely.

The noise wasnt drowned out much but it restricted water going into the hose (for all stargate/qt owners you definetely know what im talkin bout). I also noticed it filters out a lot of what seems to be nicotine. Before the session the thimble is bright silver and when I finish one session it turns all black. Flavor didnt drastically change.

Ill take some pictures when I make another one for my egyptian hookah.
