Sawdust Charcoal..

Recommended Posts

ok, so i tempted faith and actually tried them.

Lighting : No smell, no sparks.

Anxiously placed a couple pieces on my bowl, and took the first puff, so far so good. Up to now it's been about 5 minutes, and no headache or anything. But will give it another couple of minutes and see how it goes.

First impression about the ashing is that think of a natural charcoal that ash like quicklites.. yeah. tons of ash.

Some pics.

So they come in like huge bricks with holes in the middle. Actually, they're very easy to break, didn't even need to score them to break them up to little pieces. About 2$ for a 2kg bag, really cheap.

They don't give out a ton of heat though, i have 2 huge pieces on my egyptian bowl now and the tobacco is not burning at all. Hmm, might just be the perfect replacement charcoal to fend off my need of coconaras. Will see how the session goes, just changed up my flavor to Fant Pumpkin Spice (which is amazing, review coming up), so yeah. But they do ash a ton!

the part that scares me with that coal is "what" are they using for the binder? The stuff that makes the powder stay together. That could be a very dangerous experiment. You can use the stuff on your bbq grill though so all is not lost on the investment. smile.gif
Where did you pick the stuff up from and what all info was on the bag?

Just picked it up at my local superstore, there's not a single info on the bag except for the name and the factory address. There's also a telephone number so I might call them and ask them about it.

are those coals huge or does it just look big because of the picture. and also that hole in the middle seems to me that it would make them burn way faster.

They are huge. Probably 2 inches in diameter. Not really sure.

THose remind me of Kamado Coconuts briquets which I have thought of trying because they "say" that they are 100% natural. I never got any to test though.
There is some from Indonesia and other places and I have not refreshed my research in a while so what is available now is beyond me. I know the stuff is awful cheap.
My plan if the stuff was good would be to cut the stuff into disks with my bandsaw and knocking off a couple of pound batches at a time.
Here is a site that has a review from a grilling aspect. There is a lot to keep in consideration when you are directly smoking that will not be taken into consideration from this write-up.
