Scalliwag
Hi guys.Modisess thread on smoking the unknown coal brought back a memory. A long while back I ran into some info on this guy named Richard Johnson that made claims to have grilled indoors using charcoal. To me that sounds like ideas that lead to Darwin Awards You can read all about it here. http://www.kamado.com/kamado_charcoal.htmThere was also some chatter going on around the same time on a lump charcoal review site that raised concerns just because of the pissing contest. That is here. http://www.nakedwhiz.com/lumpdatabase/lumpbag69.htmBut I've always wondered how they would be without getting my own Darwin Award in the process. The reviews I've seen on coconut coal geared around hookahs was impressive. Somewhere with all my other crapola projects this turned into a forgotten idea. I never found anything out there where anyone tried it with hookahs. My idea if the stuff was good is that I was going to take the weird looking logs and cut them into disks with my handy-dandy bandsaw in batches as needed. So read up a bit on the articles and post your thoughts.

indian_villager
Holy wow scalli is still around. So your plan is to use them as some form of ridiculous exoticas? Idk that review site kinda worries me a little bit with that whole finding just a hunk of wood molded into the coal itself. It does look like it would have interesting properties given the hole in the middle. Can you tell us the length across the face of the coal? I'd still like to try them.QUOTE (SimplexCoda @ Jan 9 2009, 11:54 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>a certain person that was a member here not long ago used these all the time, in fact he sent the link to me. Was it someone that overall knew what they talking about on hookahs in general?QUOTE (Scoop @ Jan 10 2009, 02:18 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>i heard kamodo quality has gone down to the point where the coal is unusable for even cookingwell that's a real bummer. I think I will call the folks and get a sample and ask about that. Maybe let them know there is a good market in the hookah world if they can hit the quality mark. What likely affected it is fuel prices. Maybe they are not running the kiln as hot as they need to. We're used to paying higher prices for lower quantity/ higher quality coal. So if there coal quality has gone down then I can try and motivate them into stepping it back up. With this economy they should be all ears for ideas like that.
