Recommended Posts

I just got these at a local shop for dirt cheap and i was wondering if any one has tried them. I'm used to the imitation jap coals which are decent but if these are any good for the 4 bucks i paid ill definitely go back and just buy up all the coal laugh.gif

I agree with the poster above. I bought these as temps for when my exoticas came in, and these weren't that bad. Never took too long to light, and lasted a decent amount (45-ish minutes)
As far as taste goes, I never tasted coal during my session.

I've been debating on trying a couple of their 50g sampler packs of some of their weird flavors--Lady in Red, sounds like a Maraschino Cherry.

As far as these coals go, if they work as well as Canary coals, I may have to pick up some sticks to do a comparison.

i use them a lot. they are pretty good. they don't have a taste so that's good. they don't light very well on top of other coals and they take a little longer to light on the stove or hot plate. they work best on a large phunnel bowl. on a medium bowl you really have to watch it or it can get hot. they are really good for the price. i would recommend them.

They look like Syrian Japanese-style bricks. Could be Canaries (as opposed to Golden Canaries) or something like that. I haven't had a lot of success with Syrian-type coals...lots of sulfur, taste BBQ-y. They have the same "spray" finish on them. Good Japanese coals have their coatings baked on. Spray coatings are usually just paint. Japanese use a metallic mixture with some accelerants thrown in for good effect. Maybe these are the exception. I do seem to remember, like maybe 9 years ago, there may have been some good Japanese that came 3 bricks per bar...

Yes, Hypnosis is the Starbuzz spinoff I believe.
