Tax For Online Orders In The Future

Recommended Posts

I honestly dont think this will stop me from buying online, its not like I purchase cars on the internet. I will care less if i have to spend an extra 6 bucks to buy something, were already paying for shipping most of the time, so whats a few more bucks. If sales tax is going to break someone, they probably shouldnt be buying things anyway.

I can't see this going through, I am not an expert but it seems like there would be too many variables and loopholes like e-bay and craigslist type sites to really do any damage or enforce a tax. People will always find ways around regulation online.

I seriously hate New York and what it has become.

Newegg.com bought into this bullshit from New York and they did it for like 4 months and they backed off of it. I love Newegg but I stopped buying from there once they started Charging people from NY Tax. I build computers and seriously is the cheapest site but if I am building a 900 dollar system. That is a lot of Tax Money right there.. Edited by newjacksm

Well, if they can't find a way to tax it, they'll probably just go the route they did with online poker, and ban it. Lovely bunch of gents, our political leaders, eh? I'll def look for ways around it, I know very few who will. But, they will be wanting to get a cut of the profits online since we're in a tough economy right now. I wish they'd just get the idea to spend less money, cut some of the programs, and let us have the dough we earn.

Good thing I have a well stocked local shop with low prices! I pay tax on what I buy from there but I pay less than if I were to make purchases online as far as hookah goes. And for everything else this is udder bs. Can ebay be taxed for auctions?

I order mainly from H-S and I pay tax every time (I live in Texas). I put up with it because I get my packages next day and it comes out cheaper than paying 2-3 day shipping for me from most sites.

What's really interesting is that might be the final nail in eBay's coffin, they have run off most of their decent sellers with all their new policies. Dealing with sales tax will cut who's left in half.

yeah you can tax on ebay, for our auctions (we are a business) we tax every person from massachusetts with a 5% tax.

I believe it...when I do build a system, I tend to drop 2-3 grand on it....given the last build I did was about 5 years ago, but a 3 grand machine is often so badass that it's still fast even today (playing fallout3 at just a notch below maximum settings at 1360x768 on a 37" TV). Dropping tax on that would be a HUGE hit.

The taxation side is alo arguable...would the tax be in california, or in my case florida? If both want claim, that's double taxation, and a serious cause for private concern.

It would be way to complicated to regulate and I perosnally just don't see something like that ever happening unless all the states had the same sales tax rate or they made some federal sales tax law that had one rate for all internet sales. As a business to have to just figure out one state sales tax information is hard enough and to have to do it for all 50 states would take me days. Ridiculous!!!

Well, it wouldn't hurt huge businesses, who have the ability to lobby congress and hire good tax attorneys. It would hurt small business owners alot, but they don't really have much money to contribute to political causes, so, I think it could definitely come to pass. It's another barrier to entry and another tax on poor and middle class folks. Nothing new here, just another way to collect that all important government revenue at the expense of those of us who pay taxes. I sure hope they decide it's too complicated to do, but look at Sarbanes-Oxley, it was passed after the enron scandal, and it's a massive burden on smaller businesses, but a nice panic atmosphere was made, and I'm sure there's going to be a panic atmosphere created over the oncoming depression, and people will be frightened into believing that politicians need more of our money to keep something bad from happening. Bah, sorry for the rant guys.
I just think it's crap if this does come to pass. I don't even care about paying taxes for stuff, it's simply the way those taxes will fuel the further expansion of government (saving debates of the merit of government programs for a diff thread) that gets to me. How much of the year is it now that we work to pay taxes? 1/3? 1/4? Bleh!

/rant off

In any case, glad I too have a nice local shop, but until I can convince them to carry tangiers, I'll be stuck with fewer options on baccy.

I order in-state most of the time and have to pay taxes on everything I get online. It's still cheaper than brick and mortar stores. I practically dont buy anything at a store but clothes/necessities (food, shampoo, razors, etc) and fishing gear, sometimes hookah gear if it's cheap. The rest is online shopping. I dont think it will knock down my online shopping much. I figure it's just part of the world we live in. If you know the sales tax on a 3000 dollar computer, budget down to a 2200 dollar computer. It's part of life unless you live in Nevada, deal with it.
