The Works

Recommended Posts

So I've been smoking hookah for about a year. I've been using regular foil (grocery store) and them insta light coals from the local tobacco store. I always just poke as many poles as I can, not too many, but alot. I've tried using two coals, stacking coals, etc, the tobacco burns too fast, or the smoke is too thin. I'm guessing it has something to do with these factors...

So what I'm here to ask is what exactly is the how to on bowl operations.

I'm just looking for a prime experience on my new (in the mail) Mya Paragon so thanks in advance!!!

Any other suggestions or basics that I'm missing, how far to fill the water and such, would be great

Get better coals. As far as hole pattern, I do 2 rings, outer ring 12 toothpick sized holes and inner ring 8 holes also toothpick sized. Works for any shisha and bowl. Get you some better coals. If you insist on using quicklights, take one and lean it on the other one and that should be the right amount of heat. Best of luck.

to the guy earlier, eys I clicked the link, still have a qustion about the coals. Once again, maybe it is somewhere on the site, but I didn't find what I was looking through with search( I wish yall wouldnt critisize and just trust me that if I post I couldn't find it =\ )
Thanks joel for the hole poking advice, believe it of not, it helps alot. I know heat management is a big deal, I currently just bought a new thing of some quick light coals, so I'll finish those then get some real ones. Any tips on not burning it/ making it last longer...

Also, although it wasnt on this forum, thanks to the guy that said to blow through the bottem to check airflow, best tip ever!!!

Thank you all for your advice. I am confident that within the next 5 days (when my new hookah arrives) I'll have the best smoking experience of my life.

one hint I can think of right away, make sure to leave about 1/4 to 1/3 of the coal hanging over the edge of the bowl, you don't have to have the entire coal on the bowl. It took me a few tries to learn that. Also, try the hole patterns suggested above, and you might even try breaking one of those QL coals in half and using 2 halves on the bowl instead of two coals, spreading out the heat. Best of luck man! And btw, once you try natural coals you probably won't ever buy quicklites again, I know I have not bought any QL coals since I switched.

Yeah that holes poking pattern is great, I cant take credit though, someone else posted it about 6 months ago. And yes for quicklights break them into halves for easier heat management. I wouldnt worry too much about how long you can make your shisha smoke, right now work on getting it to smoke well. Once you get that down you can play with packing and amount to get it to smoke longer. For a regular egyptian bowl the best advice I ever got was to leave room between the foil and shisha so the foil never touches the shisha.

Aside from the coals, make sure you're not using too much water in the base, and that your gaskets are all nice and sealed.

Also, once you get the hang of things, I would strongly consider looking into getting a phunnel bowl. I know that there is a bit of a learning curve with them, but once you get your basic heat management down on the egyptian style bowls, the phunnels are an excellent way to preserve the flavor and longevity of your smoke sessions.

based on my experiences which were similar to yours when i started hookah there is a simple solution that worked for me, double layer the foil and use a little more coal

multiple layers retain the heat better but also make it harder to heat up so burning is harder
