Tests On Hookah Smoking

Recommended Posts

In my opinion this article is very biased and does not give where they got their sources which leads me to believe that they took the most conveniant facts. However I will say this...I know smoking is bad for me however there really is not solid study that shows without bias the effect of hookahs compared to the effect of cigarettes. (I personally think significantly less tar is produced considering if it produced the same amount the water would turn a funky color.)

There are also 2 things that make this article completely bias:

"In the case of nicotine, while most of it is left in the water, some still gets into the lungs, and 11 seconds later, into the brain.

So hookah smokers do exactly what regular cigarette smokers do with low nicotine cigarettes — they suck harder to get the nicotine hit."

First of all that is an assumption that people smoke for the nicotine buzz...there is no proof in that and personally I smoke for the flavor.

Next bullshit phrase....

"You can also catch or transmit infectious diseases by the sharing of the waterpipe — diseases such as tuberculosis and hepatitis."

Now I dont know how TB is transmitted but I know that it isnt easy to get Hepatitis and from what I have searched in Medical Journals you cant really get Hepatitas through saliva contact and thats if someone slobbers all over the hose. Also with a quick search of symptoms of TB and how it can be transmitted it is highly unlikely to get TB from another hookah smoker as if they do have TB it must be in "Active stage" which is only contagious if it is affecting their lungs....the symptoms of this would be dry cough and other obvious signs that the person shouldnt be smoking or you shouldnt be sharing the same hose as them.

the sources I used for the TB and Hepatitus info:

Hepatitus:

No sources stated, general negative tone, obviously biased article. Basically provides no insights into how hookah really effects the user.

i just read the article and it sounds like total trash. lets say that i smoke 4 f their sessions over the weekend. and it says that its 50-100 times more smoked. so that would be 1 session is 50 smokes x 4 = 200 cigs. 200/20 is 10 boxes or 1 carton. i have slight asthma that really doesnt effect me anymore but when i get drunk and smoke 1/2 a pack in a night i feel it the next day. ive smoked for 9 hours with my brother smoking tangiers and nak and felt fine.

Not sure if people have read or talked about this but thaught it would be good for you guy to see, seeing as every couple of weeks a new thread is started about it , http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/200...omentsinscience

"All tobaccos contain 0 per cent tar to start with — the tar is generated as a product of combustion only when the tobacco is heated."

combustion vs. smoldering. were not burning the stuff here!

"When tobacco is burnt, two types of products are made — gases and particles."

again were not burning it!!

"With the increased volume of smoke comes more of all the other nasties — carbon monoxide, heavy metals, hydrogen cyanide and a whole bundle of potent carcinogens."

the carbon monoxide weighs more than oxygen and sits above the waterline. when the smoke tastes funny, it may be co2 buildup. you therefore use your release valve...

heavy metal poisoning? i don't remember iron being a part of our shisha, and any heat generated is not enough to melt down metals or even get them to a point where they're instable.
hydrogen cyanide... never heard of that one. and carcinogens come with anything smoking, we're smoldering.

"So in a 20–80 minute hookah session they get about 1.7 times as much nicotine as they would do from a single cigarette."

the last time i heard statistics , it said five packs of cigarettes. theyre lacking in their scientific method and have no constants/variables defined. wheres the quaity control of the news?

also remember an 80 min session is as much time as 8 or more cigarettes... so it has to be less harmful...

"You can also catch or transmit infectious diseases by the sharing of the waterpipe — diseases such as tuberculosis and hepatitis."

Whal true, you can also take a lighter and, if you have a metal tipped hose, steralize it with the lighter for like 20 seconds

" The heat sources (especially the quick-igniting charcoals) used to ignite the tobacco also add extra health risks, thanks to their own toxicants, metals and cancer-causing chemicals. And don't forget the second-hand smoke circulating in the room."

two words: natural coals.

Oh, and that second hand smoke... it smells wonderful. much better than the inscence thats probably slowly killing me too. right? wink.gif

I agree. I had/have pretty bad asthma, weather changes affect me pretty bad, allergies, and the like. I smoked cigarettes for maybe 2 years, i would on a regular basis wake up in the middle of the night wheezing. At that time i was smoking both hookah and cigs, after i quit smoking cigs i noticed a considerable difference in the way my asthma was affecting me. I can smoke all day, and granted i might get tight in the chest a couple times from taking a big pull or something, but there are no next day effects that i have ever noticed.
