Scalliwag
QUOTE (tinyj316 @ Jan 27 2009, 11:34 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>is this going to be one of those things where we all say "why the hell didn't I think of that?" after we spend money on it?I don't think so. Tarik has a glass blower that can custom make things most of us can't for one thing. Remember this is as much a decorative piece as any hookak so it's functional art. If you tried to make one of those glass funnel bowls or mods and could pull it off and be cost effective then you may feel that way. So in a way just like you could make your own hookah most people opt for professionally made but some people are happy with a rigged up device that they spent as much in time and effort and sometimes cash as they could have bought a decent hookah. I'll be the first to say I could not make one nearly as nice as they can make and as most people that know me know I take pride in making stuff, all my favorite hookahs were not made by me. Same for bowls and hoses. There is not one I have I regret buying. A couple I regret breaking So this will fall into the same category. If they cannot sell them at a low enough price to sell it is not in their best interest. I happen to think they will be able to put out a product that will be a huge seller for them and a lot of happy customers. I have nothing to do with how much they sell them for and like with the mod it will be their idea to keep if they go with it.If they didn't have a great reputation and always been cool to me I would not deal with them. Sure it will be another idea that peeps will look at and say "damn I shoulda thought of that". Sometimes it's not so much about how complex an idea is as it is that someone was just oddball enough to come up with it first

Scalliwag
I had got to thinking about once the info gets out there on how I did this I know peeps will want to experiment on making their own. The way I made this it is as safe as a gas stove burner. If I just put out the minimum info on what it takes to build one (components) without any details of what happens if you build it wrong someone could get hurt really bad or worse. I think that explains why I'm changing directions on this and want to give you guys info to keep you safe. Some mistakes that can be made appear logical is the scary part.It involves three main components, one of which can kill you if you accidently make a bomb. So if you are going to read any of this with the idea of trying it, read everything and ask questions if it is not clear to you and don't assume anything. The three main components, small propane tank (you were right namey), an aquarium pump (threw ya with that on the electricity, crushed glass, lava, or gravel. The air and propane mix and go into the bottom of a funnel type vessel. It is VERY important that all fittings do not leak and you use a check valve in the tubing just in case of flashback. <(flames goes back into the tube and possibly pops loose and blows around the room like a water wiggle but with a flame)Don't use too deep a vessel or leave air pockets. HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF WHERE SOMEBODY GETS HURT. Let's say someone wants to save on crushed glass and kind of sits a screen in the funnel and puts the glass on top. That leaves a big air pocket. If there is a flashback, say you turn the aquarium pump off and the flame ignites the more dense gas in the pocket, it explodes and blows glass like shratnel. People almost always underestimate how bad something will explode even when they know it's going to explode. It's not something you can afford to be wrong about here. Fortunately this does not take much gas to make it work. Unfortunately most propane torch nozzles will put out WAY much more than this needs. You always want to turn the air on first. But you'll hear the air and so you may try and listen for the propane as you turn it on. If you hear a difference you turned it up too high. Light it with the long nozzle lighters to keep your hands back just in case. Don't try and rig a homemade valve for a propane or butane canister. Torch heads have built in regulators. Propane and butane is under a lot of pressure straight out of the tank and just because you run it through a really small hole, that just makes the flame shoot farther. The propane/air mix travels through the gravel all over the place and ignites making for a really neat show. The wider the area at the top the more likely unburned gas could be a problem. The largest I used is 7" which is great for a nice light show and not so large an area that I had that problem. Too small you don't get much of a light show. Too large of gravel or too small of gravel can mess up the show as well. Around 1/4" or a little less makes for a good size. After the coals are started you can turn off the propane. The air pump will keep the coals going but you lose the light show. Remember smart people are capable of dumb shit. With dumb people the sky is the limit. I know this is a 180 from where this started. I was excited about the results and just slowed down enough to think of what it may cause when it got out that you will need a propane tank, an aquarium pump, and gravel. While some will argue that people are responsible for their own mistakes I don't want my mistake being to regret not posting this. Too many hits on this thread and Youtube. I don't recommend trying this. When it comes to ways to mess up when it comes to highly flammable gases there are ways of effing up even my dumbass has not thought of so there is no way for me to give rock solid advice on everything. I will make a video later and you can see what I did for mine that works. Remember, any one variable can and probably will change results for better or worse. I talked to Tarik and he agreed that this was the right thing to do after thinking of what could happen. He will still sell kits/components and vessels most likely if there is a demand on it. Scalliwag
The video (high quality this time) is uploading to Youtube right now. It's 155 meg so it will take a while to process. Since this thread took such a drastic turn from not answering any questions to answering all I will start a new thread once it's up indicating it contains the specifics. I hope you guys enjoy it and that some of the DIY folks do me proud with their talents Again, don't blow yer damn self up!!! That's an order!!!
