joytron
do you put ice in your vase or not?and more importantly do you think it works?
Stuie
Yeah it works. I don't do it a lot, but I do occasionally. Since I got my KM Ice, i have been putting it in the Ice tray. Not as effective as in the base.
Majid
Done it a couple times. Never really noticed a big difference honestly. The temperature difference would be minimal 10/15 minutes into the session anyway.
K1024
this is funny because last night i filled a trashcan with snow and put my base in the snow. it was pretty cold, but seems like ice is easier.
Bye bye now have fun
i think ice takes away the flavor. the only flavor that i liked it was in straight mint
Capt. Morgan
Some flavors it takes away from in my opinion. It does make mint stringer though.
Cerberus
It makes AF mint taste like the nectar of the gods. I always put ice in the base when I change water. Usually don't change water more than once every 2-3 smokes though. Yes I know its terrible but I'm sadly super lazy
Scalliwag
I like it with ice except when using my QT. It is too big a pain to put in it because the whole is so small. I also have a hand painted base a buddy got me in Dubai that I am afraid that subjecting to the temp changes will cause problems eventually. It is VERY rare I pull that out to smoke though. For the flavors I like the cool air coming through the hose is great although it is a bit short lived as Majid mentioned. It really rocks when you first get SB Peach hitting really good and pulling that flavor with cooler air. Put a peach in a fridge and take a bite it is pretty dang darn
zeppyrkr
ha, way to lazy for it, never noticed a huge difference but i like to think it helps (in my head) the few times i do add it.
BarredLabel
Always use ice on my hookahs.. seems to help if the hookah gets a bit harsh from a b owl packing mistake. Plus (not that i've actually tested this) I've always thought the cool air helped to condense the smoke. As far as the ice lasting... my bowl stays cold for around 3 hours when i put ice in but like you guys said the ice usually melts off early.. maybe after 35 minutes.Anyone used dry ice? there's an open area under my base in my rotator and i fill it with dry ice (not IN the base, i know). It gets so cold on your throat your lungs contract on the inhale, it's ridiculous. I like the put my base in the freezer overnight with just enough water to be about 3/4" below where the downstem would sit. stays frozen for hours. Haven't noticed any flavour reduction but now that you mentioned it, I'll be sure to test it out
MeHT
I like the jingle of the ice cubes in the base. I usually put 2 trays of ice cubes, a lot of salt and top it with cold water. Works well for aesthetics, not sure about the flavor.

Putting salt in with the ice and water doesn't mess with the flavor any? Edited February 2, 2009 by Capt. Morgan
Hobbs
I put about 2 hand fulls of ice in my base for most every fruit flavor. I don't use ice on non fruit flavors though, like caffe latte. Whether it makes a difference or not, I like the way the smoke feels when I exhale if I have ice in the base, makes my face cool.
Hippo_Master
Ice = less smoke.

AKammenzind
I rarely use ice, just doesn't seem worth the bother and I have horrible luck with bases breaking on me... and I'm not gonna take a chance with ice, haha. I occaissionally do put my base in a bucket of snow, or frost my hookah. Gives cooler smoke, but the taste isn't as strong sometimes.

But I rarely put ice in the base now, when i was still new to hookah i added ice every time, now I just never bother to anymore. One exception though, is when I'm smoking Fantasia Rasp Lemonade.... that flavor + the cool smoke is just extremely refreshing.

freezerburn456
Almost everything that I smoke now is mint, or a mint mix. Ice makes it sooo tasty. But in my dorm I have no access to ice so I only get to use ice when I am at home or back at work.

However, you have to be very conscientious of temperature changes (e.g. don't rinse out your base with warm water after putting ice in it), because a large/fast enough change from cold to hot (or vice versa) will lead to thermal shock, breaking the base.
