Hookah Popularity

Recommended Posts

Just looking for opinions. Personally I feel it'll reach it's peac within a year, remain constant and slowly become less popular.

Seems like there's lots of people to introduce to hookah but more and more people are becoming scared of tobacco's dangers.

Perhaps more development will be done for herbal shisha. Maybe even herbal shishas will be available which offer medical remedies using tried and true herbals.
What do you guys think?

Hookah has been gaining in popularity here in America since the 70's if I remember correctly. There's nothing I've seen that leads me to believe that the trend will decline any time soon.

You haven't noticed more people quitting cigarettes since the 70's??.. Perhaps the same could go for hookah.

i think people just need to be more educated on hookahs and there ease of use..i myself stayed away from them because they looked complicated to enjoy..plus i know alot of people who look at them and assume they are used for the bad stuff..but long has there are friendly people out there to help educate, hookah cafes, and THIS FORUM AND ONLY THIS FORUM..the hookah experience can be relaxing, friendly, and fun..

Fair enough. I wish I could share hookah with the world.. but it's not so. I'm one of the biggest advocates for hookah education you'll ever meet. I'm one of those annoying guys that recites facts to explain how great hookah is to every person who seems only the slightest bit interested.

However, ever since that bogus study claiming something ridiculous like one hookah was the same as a pack of cigarettes I've noticed people are more sketchy about it. I've even known a couple people who have tossed the hose down forever after reading that crap!

wouldn't everyone agree that health awareness has risen since the dawn of man and will continue to rise? I'm sure some princeton review in the future holds some more completely bogus claims about the health risks of hookah and since people are more and more concerned with their health, perhaps it could lead to a decline ( or the herbal shisha increase).

id have to read that report and also know who came up with it..because can you imagine if everyday atleast 100 people stopped smoking cigs and switched to hookahs? thats alot of money the cig companies would lose..but eiter way everyone has to use there best judgement..bottom line is smoking hookah healthy? no i woulndt say so..is it healthier then cigs..if i had to guess i would say yes but thats just my opinion..plus you only live once..so enjoy yourself in moderation so that you live long enough to keep enjoying whatever it is your doing..because anything can kill us..food poisoning, car accident, unknowin health issues..

I wasn't alive in the 70's, so no.

Also, look at the poll thread that's big right now. You'll see a vast majority of us don't smoke cigarettes. You can hardly compare the trends.

" A study done by the World Health Organization showed that one hookah session of a mere few hours can deliver as much smoke into your lungs as 100 cigarettes."

Rediculous!

This study has been passed over by us a hundred times. I've smoked 3 bowls today. That would put my comparable cigarette inhalation at over 500. If I were to smoke 500 cigarettes in one afternoon, I would probably die.

Hookah smoke is without a doubt healthier than cigarette smoke. How much healthier is the issue.

its not ridiculous its probably pretty close to true. go smoke a cigarette and look at how much smoke you inhale compared to how much you take from each hit of hookah.

each hit of hookah is tons more smoke, but its filtered differently, which is what leads me to believe that its more safe.

another thing about hookah smoke is the coals, they are in fact what makes hookah so much worse than it could be. with electric coals the badness of smoking hookah would go down even more.

oh and on a side note...Mullein Leaf is an herb that is smoked to help treat people with asthma. it is a thing that is healthy to smoke.

It may be 100 cigatettes worth of smoke, but it is nothing like cigarette smoke. Yes it is filtered (but so is a cigarette), but that is a side note, what is important is the fact that you are not burning that much tobacco. You are mostly burning off glycerine, molasses, honey and flavoring. A good way to get a good example of the difference is to take a couple coffee filters and blow cigarette smoke threw them and see how much funk gets caught in it, then do the same with hookah smoke. You dont even see anything on the filter with hookah smoke. So there is no real comparison there.

As for hookah becoming more popular, I dont think it will ever be a mainstream thing. If you look at the majority of smokers (in the usa) it is college students and lot of them dont own hookahs, they go to lounges to smoke. I do think our ranks will increase but not by leaps and bounds.

I Just bought my first Hookah Yesterday! Was introduced 2yrs ago with some type of Strawberry
shisha and Ice water in the bowl. I quit cigarettes and smoke shisha once a week with friends! Athough I don't know where
to buy Shisha locally... I plan on just buying online. Any of you experienced smokers out there have advice on the best
smoke in your opinions? I was thinking of trying starbuzz or romman? Add me as one more person to the list of recent
Hookah popularity! Edited by Zimper

I believe people would quit cigs for the same reasons they would quit hookah. I completely agree with hookah being safer but the biast studies done by mumbling idiots says otherwise.... who's more trustworthy to the rest of the world.. you or World Health Organization?

basically what I'm saying is i have a nasty feeling that more and more studies like that will be coming out the more popular hookah gets... it seems reasonable.. the more popular cigs got the more anti smoking ads we saw and the more people quit. Should hookah ever become the national smoking phenomena that cigs have become expect to see anti hookah ads just as you would cigs....
something like that wouldn't be great for the advancement of hookah. Edited by BarredLabel

Read the thread at the top of the page titled FAQ or something. A lot of good advice on there. If you have the money to spend on Starbuzz, go for it. Just know that you'll get the same/better smoke with Al Fakher or Nakhla.

I am not at all sure what will happen but I have high hopes that the a higher percent of people in the U.S. will trend more to seeking new cultures. To me that has always been "my norm".
What makes me optimistic is that even here in Texas people seem to be trending away from the strict southern culture.
I hope to see more mediteranean (sp) establishments taking hold here. If that does happen the hookah will be alive and better than ever here.

I Quite agree Scoop.

The global recessions are going to be taking an affect. I know that I havn't ordered a damn thing
from any of my 3 fav vendors since.....August.

Radically reduced the times I smoke. Sad but true.

I rate that not many people have been ordering from there fav's etc as JD said, however generally speaking hookah popularity is increasing IMO.

I went out last Saturday to a restaurant, where we have been before but have just never thought of asking if we can bring a hookah....so we asked and were allowed. So then when we got there we set-up etc.

Then a little while later I saw two other lots of people sitting down and starting up a hookah...so I was surprised as I have never seen anyone bring it to that place before...

Yeah dude, this isn't ridiculous. They're talking about the smoke inhalation, not the tar and poison inhalation. Just think about how big of a hit you can take with a hookah vs. the size of a hit you can take with a cigarette. Just because you get more smoke out of a single hit doesn't necessarily mean you are gonna be getting the same toxic fumes as you do from smoking cigarettes though.

I smoke both cigarettes and hookah, about 5 cigarettes a day and about 5 bowls of shisha a week. Honestly there are times when I just want a cig and there are times when I just want to load up a big bowl of orange soda. I know both aren't anywhere near good for me but hey I don't want to live forever anyways smile.gif

Hookah has beengrowing all the time all over the world in my 8 years of fanatically following every aspect of the markets & forums. You can't compare cigarettes to hookah. Hookah is a hobby, its time consumming but well worth the effort. With cigarettes you open the pack and take one out, like instant coffee compared to slowly brewed.
In 8 years my breath-wind has not become harder, though 35 years ago I quit Cold Turkey smoking cigarettes for health reasons.

totally agree.. i'v gone back to laylina and buy my starbuzz at an incredibly low price os 15 bucks per 250 g's.

but as for the thread...if you look at cigarette smoke your literally burning the tobacco in hookah smoking your baking it two totally different methods of smoking so in MY EYES the comparison is hard to do
