Fireglo
I am using Diamanite charcoal which come as bars which break off into 5 pieces covered in this sliver coloured stuff. My hookah is very coal-y and all I have is a small little lighter blow torch thing to light them.Any tips on how to improve the experience? ebarnes02
make sure the silver is all burned off before putting the coals onto your bowl, that is why your hookah is 'coal-y'
jfaltous
I assume that when you say your hookah is "coal-y", you're referring to the taste that you get through it...What you need to do is make sure those coals are properly lit. You'll know they're lit up completely when the silver coating on them flakes off on its own. A small torch lighter will take forever to light them up properly, so chances are you're only partially lighting them before putting them on your bowl and thus you're getting the charcoal taste. What you need is a coil burner or a larger torch that can more effectively light them... search the forums for coil burners or anything about lighting "natural" coals and you'll find lots of info
Zinite
Buy an electric burner. They have them at Walgreens in the Kitchen Appliance section. They light the coals in 3 minutes without wasting gas or making your stove nasty.http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp...p;id=prod350527
Hippo_Master
Too much heat most likely, that's a surface-level observation though. it could also be your foil holes placement, or that you are packing the bowl too tight or too high.

Fireglo
What about lighting the coals, going away and come back instead of putting them straight through?I can't get all these fancy things, spent a fortune on paraphernalia today. What way do you recommend punching holes and placing the sheeshah on top? You can probably get one at a hardware store, but more likely anywhere you might be able to purchase small kitchen appliances. Like coffee grinders, coffee pots, veggie steamers. A hardware store?Might be worth a shot. Any big retailer of home appliances should have them near blenders and stuff. But, I have heard people across the ocean having trouble finding them. One thing you want to stay away from is these:You need to get the one with the coil, not the hot plate.
Fireglo
cool and how do you recommend placing the coals and punching holes?
Zinite
Check here http://www.hookahforum.com/index.php?showtopic=10119As far as coals, place them on the very edge of the bowl, even hanging off a little bit. Ash them every 5 or 10 minutes by dropping them a few inches onto your coal tray or a metal bowl. When you put them back, place them in a different place than they were last time. This prevents one area from getting too much heat.
