Pipe tobacco fans

Recommended Posts

Came across this link to a pipe site, where you enter in your
information, and within a couple weeks they send you a box with 22 bags
of different pipe tobacco. Now granted, not all this stuff is great
stuff, but its free, so don't complain....

Also, a lot of these are aromatics, so take that as you will.

Here are some picks of my stash:

On the link, it doesn't say anything about recieving free samples, but
don't worry, it will come within 3-4 weeks. Its shipped ground, so it
tends to take a while...

And like I said, this stuff isn't the best, but its free, so no complaining :)

Enjoy guys.
Wow! This is serious discussion. My father smoked a
pipe for 60+ years. Too bad he isn;t alive to see this, he would be
happy. (Being as he was cheap and everything)
Yes, I didn't think this thread should go in the general discussion,
and this was the only other section which seemed appropriate.

But yeah, you don't smoke any pipe Tangiers? I've dabbled very lightely
in the past, but don't even have a pipe anymore, and have hardly tried
any brands before.

I'm in the market for a cheap pipe right now, but I'm pretty sure I'm
going to pick up a cob pipe just to practice with and get accustomed to
pipe smoking in general. I hear cobs work just as good as any other
decent pipe, but you sort of have to be wearing a straw hat, overalls
and really enjoy the company of your cousin...

From what I've heard from other guys who got this freebie is that not a
lot of this stuff is premium, but its free, so yeah... I'm really
excited to try all the vanilla flavors that came in here.

Yash,
Thanks for that site. Oh on a side note cobb pipes or made in my home town.
Well I call it my home town cause I went to school there. But good ol' Wash, MO.

'Bout the only thing we're know for......  That and the center of Missouri Wine Country.

Servicable pipes can be had for as little as $20. I dare say pipes may have the largest span of pricing, from say $10 to $40,000. Wow! Yes, I have smoked pipe, in the past. Me and a friend of mine used to enjoy going to nightclubs and sitting outside smoking a pipe.Missouri wine country? California "wine" country is bad enough, but Missouri? There was a day when...well suffice it to say California wine is crap.

hmm, i've heard blue note is good, and i've heard from a lot of places that night cap is good.  not a bad selection.  although dutch masters CANT be good.  i know their cigar tobacco has no purpose but to be dumped out by the side of your car in the convenience store parking lot.  why anyone would choose to smoke that stuff in a pipe is beyond me.

Most of the winerys around here have won many national and international awards.
I guess that is good. All I know about wine is what I like, and aside
from that  I don't know to much about wine.  I have only been
to one which is Robller vineyard. Which is where my fience and I are
going to get married.

Here is there link if interested.

At the forum I found this link, they have a large pipe section
megathread, and a lot of them claim that the fox and hound blend is
pretty good as well.

But yeah, there are some good smokes in there, and some bad ones, but
its to be expected when they are giving away so much free stuff.

A buddy of mine tries all his new pipe tobacco flavors with a cobb pipe
so he doesnt ruin his good pipes with any ghost flavors, like what
Lakemonster said.

I'm not really an aromatic fan myself, when it comes to pipe tobaccos. I started on aromatics nearly 10 years ago, but I got sick of them. Give me an unflavored aged Virginia any day. I'm a fan of several McClelland varieties, with Dark Star, Blackwoods Flake, and #27 being my favorites. Dark Star looks like black beef jerky.and it takes some effort to rub it out, but it's a sweet smoke. Blackwoods Flake and #27 smell kind of like ketchup or Heinz 57 sauce in the tin due to the aging, but they're good smokes. Blackwoods Flake is kind of a sweet BBQ-y flavor and #27 is a little lighter and almost slightly lemony in a lemongrass sort of way. I tend to smoke these in a briar or a meerschaum pipe.I've tried some of Rattray's blends like Marlin Flake and Hal o' the Wind, but they seem to be better smoked out of a clay pipe, like one of the colonial-style ones you can get at Williamsburg, VA. Those varieties aren't aged as long and smell more like cut grass in the tin.I do like a few varieties that contain latakia, most notably McClelland's Frog Morton on the Town. It's a little lighter than your typical English and has a little bit of some sort of casing on it (which is weird for latakia blends), but it definitely still has that latakia campfire / shoe leather taste.

Looking for a few good pipes? Try: http://www.iwanries.com/They're about the best place online for new pipes. Also try: http://www.premierpipes.com/You can't go wrong with a Boswell, but for starters just get yourself a few cob pipes from someplace like Walgreens. Guest Abide
a couple of my favorite stores are smokingpipes.com, pipesandcigars.com and thepiperoom.com

the pipe room has some fantastic house blends. Im a big fan of
churchwardens myself and usually smoke aeromatics, but i do enjoy some
nightcap from time to time. I have about 5 briars 1 meerschaum and 6-7
cobs to mess with, its not a bad collection. I have to say though my
favorite pipe tobacco by far is Peterson's Sunset Breeze (amaretto
flavor) its delicious!

I have not tried the Sherlock Holmes tobacco myself, but give it a try and see what you think. Just be aware that smoking traditional tobacco in a briar pipe has quite a learning curve. Do not be afraid of re-lights and do not give up. If you need help, just PM me and I will do the best I can. Welcome to "The Brotherhood of the Briar".

Heh, I go through so much butane relighting that I keep an extra can on hand to refill my lighter. Pipe tobacco will go out on you very easily. My usual packing and lighting "strategy" is to put a good sided pinch of tobacco in the bowl and push it down lightly. This will only fill about 1/3 to 1/2 of the bowl. Add another pinch and push that down a little harder, the add another and push it down harder than the last to fill the pipe mostly to the top. The technique is sometimes referred to as "pack it first like a baby, then like a boy, then like a man". I light it by drawing air in while circling the flame over the tobacco, giving it a couple puffs, then I let it go out. I then pack down the burned tobacco on top that has "fluffed" up and relight. When it goes out again, usually when I'm not paying any attention to it, I pack down the ash and tap out any loose ash into an ashtray before relighting.

Hmm, glad to hear this link has been useful to some of you. I had no idea that there were infact quite a few pipe buffs on here. I myself am not, but I wouldn't mind getting into it in the future. I think I want a nice churchwarden "hobbit" style pipe. Anyone know of a particular site which will have the best churchwarden for the best price? But yeah, I plan on starting off using cobbs. Don't want to toast a perfectly nice pipe on crappy flavors...

Not sure of the best site for churchwardens, but I bought a clay churchwarden (off e-bay).  Smokes like a dream, especially straight red virginias!  I'll be smoking it Friday, for a little St. Patty's day celebration feel.
Ya might try these links, if you have not already.

The last one is the one I have, not too bad, not really fragile either, but does take a little soft handling.
