mustang_steve
This sounds like a no duh thing, but it's worth mentioning....Don't store coals in a cedar box. Your coals will taste like a campfire. That said, off to various shops to find a box that looks good on my endtable but doesn't screw up the coals. I'm probably going to toss out two rolls of coals over this....let my snafu be your teacher
Hippo_Master
Well, Cedar holds moisture extremely well. Coals absorb excess moisture, so they will absorb the water from the Cedar, and cedar is extremely aromatic, so it will implant taste on the water. So yeah, you're right!Honestly, one should just use a tupperware. You want airtight so no fluctuations mess your coals up.EDIT: Post 500! Edited February 7, 2009 by Hippo_Master
mustang_steve
grats on 500, now you're just 50 posts away from"to much time on his hands" My problem was I had the bright idea to use this gorgeous A.Fuente Heemingway cigar box....they are full cedar with brass hinges and whatnot. A pleasure to behold..but well, they kill coals.I'm going to get some CH quicklights from John, but until they arrive I'm going to get some more 3kings rolls from the local shop. At least these 40mm Goldens that were too hot for their own good are done for

Anyway, QL need to be stored airtight for sure. That ignition stuff goes out after about a month if left open to air.

Just the flavor was totally screwed.I have one Hemmingway left, it's sitting in my large humidor waiting for the right time to light it up...I'm waiting for when I finally score a job and get my ass off unemployment.
