ebarnes02
So, anyone else here really enjoy a nice well, crafted beer? Along with Hookah, Beer is one of my favorite things (I'm not talking Bud, Miller, Coors). More specifically in the vain of local, independent micro-brews and home brews. Anyone have good local breweries in their areas, or do their own homebrewing ? The Philly area has a such a great variety of different breweries in the area and some amazing bars; We tend to get a lot of German and Belgian imports in Philly before anywhere else in the country. At the beginning of March there is the second annual Beer Week with all kind of beer tastings, brewing seminars, and all kind of different events. Anyone in the area should definitely try to make it out to some of the events. I've been planning on brewing my own beer for quite some time, but have just been putting it off b/c i haven't had the funds. I'm hoping by the beginning of this summer i should be up and running and brewing my first batches. My favorite types of beers are: IPAs, Porter, Stout, and probably brown ales. Anyone else? ebarnes02
Yeah, Chocolate Stouts are amazing! Try the Flying Dog Triple Double Dog IPA, talk about WAY too much hops. Not a fan of many of their beers, but i love the artist who does their labels.Best IPA I've ever had is either Flying Fish's 60 Minute or from a Brewery called Smuttynose. My favorite right now, that you can only get draught in my area, is by the Philly Brewing Co. is a Coffee Porter. SO Good!

Hobbs
Guinness is my weapon of choice here.My dad bought a little micro brewery kit that was pretty cool, he would try a different brew every month and it was a lot of fun. There's a sweet beer room at a Food Lion near me, you go in and it's a circular room with basically 200+ different types of beer. Rasberry Ale is on my list to try next.
ebarnes02
Guinness is amazing, i have kinda gotten away from drinking it recently - I largely prefer Beamish or Murphys these days. There a few really good import take out beer places in philly. PA is such a strange state when it comes to liquor laws. Liqour and Beer aren't sold in the same stores, Liquor is controlled by the state and beer is usually privately distributed. There's a new takeout beer place that is opening around the corner from my house their planning on having around 600 labels, and are also considering selling hops and other beer geek stuff. Before i'd have to take a bike ride to the other closest decent take out beer place, and i can't even do that anymore cuz i recently got hurt. MeHT
I'm a fan of Wessbiers, mostly. Franziskaner (both light and dark), Paulaner, Edelweiss and Liebenweiss is what I mostly drink. My all time favorite, though, is Schneider und Sohn Aventinus. Too bad I can't find it where I am at.

ebarnes02
This past summer i went to a wheat beer festival at a local bar, there were about 12-15 breweries there about 30 different beers. So much good beer, and i'm not into wheat beers that much (but they are great for the summer). My favorites were: Troeg's Dreamweaver Wheat, Ommegang Wit, Allagash Wit, and River Horse Summer Blonde. Anyone else really get into seasonal beers? I usually tend to, i love drinking barleywine during the cold winter, wheat or a saison is great during the summer, but i just have never been able to get into the fall beers.Oh yeah, and i say eff Sam Adams (however they do a lot for the homebrew scene) Edited February 12, 2009 by ebarnes02

ebarnes02
We didn't really go out at all while we were up. Mostly hung out at the cabin we had for the weekend, saturday was all day tailgating for the game, and then sunday was heading home. As for yuengling, i don't really drink it anymore. I grew up drinking it and i just really got tired of it. Now i'd much rather have a yuengling than any BMC. I still love the fact that if you go into any bar in philly and order just a 'lager' you get yuengling. It's such an old beer, but still relatively unknown to pretty much anybody outside of the area. thecyrax
Do you guys go to the flying saucer? They have roughly 200 different beers (75 or so drafts, rest bottles)monday nights are $2.50 a pint and sunday is $2.50 texas beers (here). If you join their club and try 200 different beers there you get a plaque with your name/picture/quote on the wall.Pretty much my fav bar I've ever been to. ebarnes02
The darkhorse looks like a cool place up there, i think i remember going by there. The rathskeller is pretty legendary, although i'd probably never end up going there. There's a darkhorse pub here in philly; a really, really nice english pub. Probably the best bar in the city to catch a soccer match, they're open at like 5 AM during the world cup. Here's some more awesome bars if anyone ends up in philly, the first two are my two favorite bars that i'm usually always at, they have limited selections but they are constantly changing. The other two are known for having wider selections and they usually get the rare kegs or casks. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/11110/?view=beerflyhttp://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/15173/?view=beerflyhttp://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1118/?view=beerflyhttp://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2780
