Instead Of Honey, Try Agave

Recommended Posts

While making a weekly trip to Fresh and Easy, I went down the baking supplies aisle and came across agave. It's a liquid meant to replace sweeteners such as cane sugar, corn syrup, and honey. The viscosity is the same as honey, but isn't as sticky, which I found to be a plus for packing bowls.

At $6 for 20oz or so, it doesn't come cheap. However, it definitely adds more flavor and body to the smoke than honey ever did.

Exactly!

Unfortunately, I'm not patient enough to try to ferment this stuff.

I did some extensive reading on how tequilla is made and trust me I am not near patient enough to go down that road. If you have not read up on the subject it is very interesting. How long it takes the agave to mature, etc.
Tequilla is cheap shit for what goes into it.
There is agave wine that is seriously good shit as well. You can make tasty margaritas without as much kick to them.

This is about as far as my patience goes when playing with alcohol: http://www.instructables.com/id/Shoot-the-...Skittles-Vodka/

on a side note agave is great stuff. It has a lower glycemic index than sugar or honey, meaning it is absorbed slower into the bloodstream so you dont get the sugar spike affect. Also it is less viscous than honey and has a great taste to boot.

Mattarios reccomended this to me (see above) and I bought some from my work (Trader Joes).

Works FANTASTIC!

Less viscous as mentioned, and actually has a less pronounced flav than honey IMO. Made me Nak Chocomint a million times better.

Oh and at TJ you can get 11.75 ounces for 2.99, which is a bit cheaper.

Yeah Joy, I'm a big fan as well. It actually goes really well in coffee which suprised me so I use it in coffee now.

hmmmmm.... this info is really about to come in handy for me. I have been wanting to experiment with mullein and kinick-kinick http://www.spiritplants.org/shamans-hut-f24/topic2363.html and sweet basil making homemade herbal shisha.
I also have a really weird (even by my standards weird!) idea that I'm wondering about. I have read that the glycerin is what makes the smoke is shisha. Well if thats true then you *should* be able to use even non-consumable matter instead of tobacco. Some of you will catch where that is heading biggrin.gif It could bring a whole new meaning to "liquid smoke".

Damn, i hope i can find this stuff in sweden, the closest stuff ive found to this and glycerin is like hand lotion wallbash.gif

Unless it is being exported from here or Mexico I dunno. I did some quick research and what Teq is talking about is referred to as agave nectar. There is a lot of buzz out there on the health benefits. The more I read on it the more I like it. That and me and Tequilla go WAY back smile.gif
Since there is a big health buzz on it there is a good chance you can find it there. Getting shit from health stores I find is usually marked way up though.

Did some quick search on google, loads of swedish health sites selling it, kinda confused if its the same stuff though, some places calls it agave syrup. Which color should it have? On the pictures ive found it looks brown/amber. http://ekodirekt.jetshop.se/pub_images/ori...esirap_1932.jpg

I believe eric tried that and it failed. IIRC

And if herbal shisha tells you anything, the medium (tobacco) the molasses and glycerin is mixed with counts about as much as the glycerin and honey/molasses itself, if not more.
