erufiku
Hi guys, I know we've had hundreds of posts about the effects of smoking hookah on health. But since there is so little knowledge/research, I want to ditch the speculations and ask seasoned hookah smokers: what (side) effects have you noticed so far? Please refrain from posting "symptoms" if you've just been smoking for a couple of years (or months). Many of us here are still in college, so it would be nice to know what we're getting into
mikeypas
Hey ! I don't know if you'd call me seasoned, been smoking hookah for about 10 years, about once a day.I'm actually surprised I don't have more sequelae for smoking this long. I still go trekking for days to a week at a time in high altitude without problems. I do tend to get bouts of "smokers cough" that can last several weeks. Hope that helps

ilikemyusername
just keep in mind, it can't be "good" for you. but neither is drinking, fast food, living in cities, stressful jobs, ozone, etc.

erufiku
OK keep 'em coming, it's JD's (I think) reply that got me thinking: he was mentioning how he's more prone to lung-related infections, etc. Not exactly rocket science but I personally have never thought about the long term toil.At the same time I remember Canon saying he sees no difference... difference being that he has a hella healthy lifestyle, ie. gets tons of exercise and so on.edit: interestingly enough, after 1.5 years of smoking I can still run pretty well... surprisingly well given how much I suck at cardio. Canon
ive been doing it for a while. ive noticed all of these...first dont smoke if your going to work out in a few hours, it makes it harder to run if you just smoked. your heart rate goes up faster then normal.there is sometimes a buildup of mucus in your throat if you smoke for a while, that causes me to cough. but i do have allergies and have been coughing up mucus before i started smokingif you stop working out for a while and smoke hookah (say a month) while you dont work out and you try to get back to it your lungs will burn, i think that is because your lungs arent used to the work. or it could be because of the smoking.thats about it for me.on a happier note, i havent ran in forever, ran 1 1/2 mile yesterday in 13:30. my lungs didnt hurt until after the run was over. (last time i ran was about 9-10 months ago and i weigh 220)

inino
6 years of smoking, and my lungs still look as good as the day i started. i do exercise almost every day though. I would image that if i didnt exercise my health would only be slightly worse though.
SuburbanSmoker
smokers cough is a result of smoke killing the bacterium in your esophogus. people cough to compensate for this.I personally have been smoking for almost 5 years and only notice the effects of it if i become lazy and dont exercise. Scoop
smoked for 8 years. the last 3 have been on nearly a daily basis. the only side effect i notice is that after a few months, i get completely burned out....nothing tastes good, it has no "body" in terms of smoke if that makes sense and then i stop for a month.as of recently, i have hardly been smoking to be honest. just missing something for me.however, i dont or have ever had chronic phlegm, i haven't gotten a long infection (knock on wood), nothing weird. working out hasnt changed. Majid
A few years ago i smoked daily without a proper setup, hitting a harsh bowl way too long, back then hookah messed up my throath to the point that my voice got raspier. Now i smoke daily without any noticable side effects, i'm never sick, never feel weak or any throath problems. Granted, i haven't been exercising so i can't tell if my stamina is worse for it. Hippo_Master
I have been smoking well over 6 years now. I also smoke mostly Desi murli, and also many cigars.I run 2 or more miles away. I had to buy a dog so I had a partner to run with. . I have noticed 0 ill health affects. I have gotten mouth infections a couple times though - but those are easily beaten.Ohh, i just got a full check-up, and had the doc x-ray my lungs. I told him I smoked and he was completely surprised. Edited February 18, 2009 by Hippo_Master
a_shimoon
I've smoked shisha for about 5 years, and more heavily for the past year. I smoke about 2-5 bowls per day.I get phlegm daily, normally in the morning in the shower I just cough it out (about 2 or 3 coughs)I used to get sick more often, but I've kept to a policy of using my own tip whenever smoking (I smoke with friends often), and haven't gotten sick since. MechAnt
It's hard for me to tell because I have been smoking hookah for 3 years and cigarettes for the last year and a half. Lately I've been getting a lot of phlegm but that's because I'm currently in the process of quitting cigarettes (third day, I should be ok!). I doubt it's from the hookah. As for exercise, I haven't done cardio in FOREVER minus riding my bike to class everyday though I do still weight lift and stuff. Hopefully over the next few weeks I can chronicle my health improvements (and what has not improved) to pinpoint what is caused by what.
Sylren
I smoked cigarettes for years and I had awful health effects from them (why I quit). I couldn't breathe, I had a lot of phlegm, I was sick all the time and always got a sore throat and swollen tonsils. Now I only smoke hookah and I have no side effects from it. It just feels totally different and healthier than cigs.
redjako
Hookah for about 2.5 years, heavy use last year (almost daily).Smoked ciggies for last 1.5 years, got up to a pack and a half a day.QUITTING ciggies got me really sick, screwed up my cardio, weights, etc.The only "side" effect I'm noticing from hookah is 1) High heart rate on long sessions sometimes. If I immediately do something physical (like walking stairs at school or something, 5 minutes after a session) I am out of breath.Smoking for two weeks straight at 1-2 hours a day = cottonmouth and really can't be better then eating spinach for you. Sordino
Hookah for like 3 years, heavy use in this past year, pretty much every day.Noticed I have been more prone to infections and illness since I upped my smoking habits, not sure if that is related.I agree with the high heart rate after long sessions, especially if I am walking up the stairs to my dorm...gets kinda difficult and out of breath.
