water discoloration/foil

Recommended Posts

I know that these are technically two different topics, but:Should I be experiencing discoloration in my water? After an hour of smoking my water is still crystal clear. Also, I have been using distilled water, as our local tap water tastes like it's been filtered through a turd. Is this a problem, or does it even matter?Secondly I didn't want to search through the thousands of posts on foil, so, are there any advantages to the prepackaged hookah foils over household foil (other than convieniance <sp?>)?

Household foil gets the job done, it just requires the extra work of tearing it.  I usually do a bunch at once and have a stack so everytime I smoke I don't need to play with the roll of foil.  I prefer the heavy-duty foil vs the standard stuff because the standard stuff seems to rip too often when punching the holes (maybe I need a sharper instrument?).  I can't tell the difference between using heavy-duty or standard though.  You also have the option of a screen, but make sure it fits well onto the bowl you're using or you may be dissatisfied.  I've gone back and forth between foil and a screen and have chosen to stick with foil.  Others have done the opposite ;)
I use standard tacks to poke my holes. It's a good way
to get a clean hole with no rips or tears. I also use heavy duty foil
for extra-durability.
Quoted for truth. Well, sort of. I use a push-pin. Pretty much the same thing as a tac, but with more of a handle :)

As for the water discoloration, it could just be that you're tobacco is
a bit dryer, so no goopy residue is getting into the water and staining
it. And perhaps some tobaccos just don't stain the water as much as
others. I know people who get yellowish water, brown, even sort of a
green, and sometimes it stays pretty clear. You shouldn't have to worry
about your water being clear, its doing its job.

Just make sure you see your water bubbling, or else your stem isn't in the water and it isn't doing anything ;)

Thanks for all of the replies. I've been smoking up the 50g sampler pack of Romman strawberry that came with my hookah. And of course I'm getting bubbles Yashman, they're the true meaning of life, aren't they?

Smoking from household aluminum isn't good for you
anyway, there are also bonding agents that give off fumes. Don't be afraid with OCCASIONAL smoking,
but don't make it a habit; don't use household foil on your personal hookah. There
is foil available made especially for hookahs, or use a screen
meant for hookahs. The latter is recommended, but your bowl will last much
longer with foils if the holes are done correctly. This is something I found on the web and have heard a lot from my friends.  Does anybody know if this is true?

Gee Heather, tacky? I can't believe it.Aluminum foil is safe...why would it need a binder...its a metal. If the product is intended for food use (which household aluminum foil is), it would have to meet FDA standards, so I'm 99% sure that foil is perfectly safe, especially household foil. On the other hand, if you were to buy something that was "for hookahs" it wouldn't have to meet any regulations at all...could it have lead in? Yes. You can;t tell how they mae that product and nobody's watching to make sure you're not in danger. Water discoloration is normal, as far as I know, it depends on how mch artificial color a brand uses and how much you smoke at a time. What brand are you smoking?

ive found that the smaller the hookah the more color disfiguration seems to occur in the water in the base...when i owned a 17'' hookah the water was almost always discolored in some way...when i went up to a 25'' hookah the water was the same after the smoke as it was when i first put it in....
