JDHarding
I'm smoking my hookah right now and kinda buzzed.. but..I bought one of those Heba plastic diffusers 'cause I heard somewhere that they were good and made more and thicker smoke. I'm using it right now with a small Tangiers phunnel, my own small version of the scalli mod, a full bowl packed to the top of Nakhla double apple, and 3 coco naras.. and I'm getting some smoke, but not a lot. Not like the reviews said. The pull is also more difficult. I filled the base so that the water is completely over the diffuser, and installed the diffuser on the stem so that the bottom of the stem is just a little away from the bottom of the diffuser. Should I use less water? Did I do it wrong?
redrum10498
I can't say much for the plastic diffusers, having never used one.I made diffusers for all of my hookahs and they made a significant difference on all of them. What I did was cut out a piece of screen from a window about 1" x 1", and used electrical tape to wrap it around the stem to hold it in place. It makes the smoke much thicker and the pull easier. If you end up trying this, make sure to wash the piece of screen thoroughly!! All kinds of things tend to build up in them.I can post picture if you need. Hippo_Master
Nothing. They are supposed to make the smoke into smaller bubbles in order for them to "become more hydrated" and absorb more water because more bubble = more total surface area. So the smoke is suppose to be smoother. It also tightens the pull and makes the hookah rattle quieter.

Like just wrap the end of the stem over with a screen?I think the plastic one is asking for the water to be too high. Just 1/2" up past the bottom of the stem would be fine, I would think. redrum10498
yup pretty much. put the stem in the center of the 1" x 1" piece. hold the excess screen tight and wrap electrical tape around it about an inch up the stem.this will achieve the smaller bubble technique that Hippo_Master described, while in my opinion working better than a retail diffuser. JDHarding
I changed the amount of water in the base so that the end of the stem is submerged 1/2" in the water and the diffuser's bottom is only a little ways from the stem's bottom.. it works MUCH better like this. There's hardly any noise now, and I'm getting big clouds of smoke after the same cocos have been going for about an hour now.. lol.
redrum10498
haha that just goes to show you that experimenting gives you better results than reading the instructions.hookah is an art...not a science
JDHarding
Well it's kind of a science too.. too much water made it difficult to draw on the hose, while less water not only made it easier to draw, but also the holes on the bottom of the diffuser were still "diffusing" the smoke. The rest of this diffuser is kind of a waste. It only needs to be about 1/2" long to work.
