bowl+cover combo...

Recommended Posts

After all is said and done the thing worked very well.
Went to my local cafe with it, the guys were interested in seeing if it worked. I packed the bowl myself, leaving a fair amount of space at the top. One of the owners said it wouldn't work with so little Ma'asell, I told him to trust me.
So we got a chunk of bulk coal, dropped it on, closed the lid and in short order had it going great. Lots of smoke, full flavour, no fuss no muss. One of the other guys said it worked better than he imagined it would, lasted longer, and proceeded to set up a bowl of his own on a regular head with a screen instead of their usual foil...Let the revolution begin!
Smoked that sucker for almost an hour and a half....
The only thing you have to watch out for is that the whole thing, including the latch, gets hot, so have a pot holder if you are going to latch it and inlatch it, oh and move the screen tab to the side so you can hold it with your toher hand when you pop the latch/lid or it has a tendency to come up with the lid. After the first time or two we just closed the lid without latching it, worked.

Mush, great job! However, till this day, I just can't get the heat management quite right with mine. I use 1 3 kings, and it's too hot. Okay, no problem. I go down to 3/4 of a coal, and it's Okay for 5, maybe 10 minutes then it goes too weak. I just can't find an economical coal/ heat solution. I figured if I just stick with foil, I will use less coal in the long run with a better, long lasting smoke.
I know, "use natural coals."  However, the chances of being consistent with them are slimmer due to having to break them up. My biggest gripe with natural chunks is that out of a bag, only 1/2 is used because when being broken up, so much is wasted due to all the little unusable pieces produced.
Fingers are not an option, as I enjoy living. Man, just wish someone would package lemon wood in proper size/shape chunks.
I'm rambling.

I couldn't agree more. The bowl work damn well, and is even converting
me to using screens more. The problem with the screen I had in the past
didn't fit worth a damn on my chinese ceramic bowl. But now that I got
the same bowl I love to use with the built on screen/lid from Sammer,
I'm seeing the light I suppose

But yeah, I also have found that not latching the lid on works just
fine. It still makes a nice tight seal for me, not letting out much of
any heat.

ive been noticing the same things as all the other users of the bowl.
its excellent and with a few little tips, its way easy to use.

just tilt the tab of the screen to the side like others have said.
i just use my tongs to lift the windcover tab, works perfectly.

i never bothered to latch it while smoking, i figure the metal would be burning hot and it would be impossible to unlatch.

I figured the same thing...never actually latched it while using, but
usually close it. Always use the tongs when lifting the lid...as you
can imagine, that thing gets hot as sh**. This bowl works wonders.
Alright...I'll give in...I'm gunna go try some nakhla mixed fruit and
see about that one post about it actually tasting good with a wind
cover...no idea how that would happen but just for kicks...

Hahahaha...I actually did Nakhla Apple instead since I'd never tried
it. Wasn't the best in the world, IMO. Good thing it was only $1.

You'd most definately be getting a good setup if that were the case - I use M-Audio Studiophile LX4 studio monitors

Hey hey! Good to see I'm not the only one that about burned their
fingertips off the first time they went to lift the lid to check the
coal on this badboy

I use this type of bowl for smoking my Fumari Junior outside and
it really works wonders! I've been using a single 3 Kings quicklight
with it and been getting about an hour and 20 minutes of smoking
goodness out if it. I swear this bowl really does make your sessions
last longer!

One thing I did notice about it though is that sometimes it seems to insulate the charcoal a little too
well and ends up emparting a bit of a mild charcoal flavor onto
whatever ma'assell I'm smoking, which never happens with a normal bowl.

Thats only happened twice in the many times I've smoked it, but
I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem as well?

I guess the main thing to know with this bowl is that no matter what you do, once it gets going NEVER touch that windcover with your fingertips! I learned that one the hard way

But on the upside, I've never had any ma'assell actually burn
when smoked in this bowl. I just sprinkle it in to about 3/4 of the way
up the bowl (never to the point of touching the screen) and it works
great and smokes forever.
