mycompstinks
I just bought some natural coals to finally try them out and see if they're better than QL's. The first box I opened up was some of the japanese Exotica fingers. I cut them up into smaller pieces and throw them on the hotplate. I got some naturals in hopes that they wouldn't smell as bad as QLs when lighting but these aren't much better. We all know QLs have that nasty chemical smell when lighting, but when I put the exotica pieces on the burner they start to smell like a campfire or even moreso like grilling up corn on the cob if you've ever been to a corn boil out in the country you'll know what I mean. I was reading some old threads about Exoticas and people were complaining of something similar with the odor, but I also read that even naturals emit a slight odor when lighting. So is this normal for exoticas or is this a bad batch? I've got a box of coconara's to try too so should I open those up and give them a shot instead? dafunk5446
Well the odor your describing is normal (you are burning plant matter), all naturals give off different smells. CH coals, for example, actually smoke when lighting and stink worse then any other brand I have used, but once lit they do not emit smoke or any smell. Exotica's are known for being a little less quality then some of the other coals out there, but I wouldnt think its a bad batch based on the campfire smell. Try out your coco's and see if you like them more, its all personal preference regarding which coals are better.
mattarios2
try them all and see what you prefer, a slight odor is completely normal, I am sure the coals are fine, usually a bad box consists of the coals breaking too easily, or when handling them like ashing them they crack in pieces, or while lighting the coals they crack on the heater. The smell of the coals is usually consistent whether they are a bad batch or a good batch.
Voski
Those aren't Japanese finger coals they are just finger coals. Yes they are known to smell when they are fully lit it should have no smell. Cocos also have a smell when lighting
Hobbs
They smell like a sack of asshole for a few minutes while you're lighting em, but I've never had a problem with exoticas imparting any taste though and I use them fairly often.
mycompstinks
Yea, they are great coals. I've used them a few times now I was just curious if everything was normal. I just didn't think the odor when lighting would be that strong (to me). But it's true they don't impart any of that nasty smell to the tobacco. I had the most flavorful session ever last night with them so I'll just keep with it.
