Will_Evo
Hey all, I just wanted to share a picture I saw about a year ago, very interesting..and it may open your eyes a little. It is called the HUDF(Hubble Ultra Deep Field) Image. It is an image taken by a satellite that was sent to the darkest part of our immediate space we know about so that it could catch even the slightest light in the distance. The image shows 10,000 specs of light...and at first look may look like stars..but when you look at it closer...you begin to realize that those specs are individual galaxies...thousands of them. Now I don't know if you know anything about astrology, but a galaxy is estimated to contain billions of solar systems...and each solar system can contain 1-20 planets... can you even fathom the numbr of planets in that single picture? 10000x1,000,000,000x9=900000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 planets...in a picture that shows only one thirteen-millionth of the total area of the sky....is it hitting you in the gut yet? Also...just so you know, the picture we took is about 13 billion years old...based on the distance the light traveled...we are actually looking 13 billion years ago... read the wiki..it will explain better.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubble_Ultra_Deep_Field
MeHT
Human life is pointless and indiscernible in the eyes of the Universe, big whoop. Just take what you can get from life and forget any illusions of grandeur one may have.

Dylank0010
That should be enough to strip anyone of their ego if you just sit there and think about it for a minute. One of the main reasons I've tried to slow down and appreciate some things in life. We could(will eventually) be snuffed out in a blink and on the grand scale, it is not going to mean a thing.Unless Master Chief is there to save us!!!!! ColibriDon
One of my favorite pictures. And, Dylan, even the Master Chief is powerless against the end of the universe! haha
jellywerker
Yep, we are totally alone. There is NO conceivable way that there is even bacteria somewhere else in space. Our random ass planet is just so much better than any other planet out there that God only felt like making people on Earth./sarcasmIt's pictures like this that make me think there has to be a God of some form, and that anyone who thinks we are truly alone has to be off their rocker. I have a theory about this, but this probably isn't the place to post it.

SuburbanSmoker
To what the OP said, with all those planets, thats why every astrologist will tell you that they believe in life else where. the odds of there being a similar planet to ours that could sustain life is actually not that bad at all.Now the notion of aliens being little green men is absolute bullshit, but just something to think about. Will_Evo
That picture is very amazing indeed. I take alot from it, basically because it makes me and my life so tiny in the realm of things, it makes me take every second I have and do the most with it. This picture is what also helps justify what I believe...well not religiously, but in theory. I do not believe in any god, or theory of evolution we as humans believe in today...mainly because we only know us, we only include us, no religion makes mention of other planets and the things that may be living on them...if one day we come in contact with an alien species...that is the day "Earth Bound" religion(As I like to call it) dies, along with it all theories of our existence. I mean what happens if and when we come in contact with another intelligent lifeform and they too have religion and theory...what does it do to ours besides completely void all of them. I do believe in a God...but no man on earth knows who, what, where, when it is, because quite simply..we are 1 planet out of 10 x 10^infinite planets there are. How can you honestly say you have the answer to life? Its very naive. Anyways I don't want to offend anyone...just shedding light on what this picture does for me...-Evo
Will_Evo
I also want to make sure people who look at that realize..that picture is looking 13 billion years into the past....before the earth existed. Its hard to understand so let me explain...it takes the light from those galaxies 13 billions years to travel to where we are now...so basically we are seeing steady stream of light from those galaxies that is 13 billion years old..those galaxies are by no means in another dimension or time..they exists in the same time and space we do.its just we cant see the here and now from where we are...so what we are seeing, looking at took place before this hunk of rock we are living on even existed...to me...that little tid bit is enough to disprove ever religion on this earth.-Evo
SuburbanSmoker
To elaborate on that point, when we see light from stars, that light was on its way however many years ago.(this is determined by lightyears, if a star is 2 light years away, the light we see is from two years ago.) because of this we dont know what stars are really in the sky right now, only what stars are there how ever many years back that the light left. Its an interesting thought, but evo i suggest you check out the movie religulous by bill mayher. it is epic in every way.
SilentBob
That is an amazing picture, definitely puts things in perspective. Makes you feel small, but not in a bad way. I don't see how people could think that Earth is the only planet that has any intelligent life on it, especially after seeing pictures like this. Light bends, there are a multitude of black holes which suck it up. That very 13 billion light years they admit might be off 3 billion light years. Now, 3 out of 13 doesn't seem like a lot but 3 billion light years is a long way to go on an empty stomach. His basis premise is that Cosmologogy is a religion with priesthood and religous dogma. And just like scientists were persecuted by the Church , so are people who doubt the Big Bang theory and other lulus which have been unproven called "Heretics" today and "stoned" in the multi-media. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nl3Uj2UJjPA here is the video professionally done, quite riviting. cotsi95
I just want everyone to know that a light year is not a unit of time your not looking light years into the past a light year is a unit of distance. It is about 5,878,630,000,000 miles.
jellywerker
Yes, but we see things as they are represented by the light reflected from them. If something is one light year away, that is 5,878,630,000,000 miles, and light travels at a rate of 5,878,630,000,000 miles per year, we are seeing that object in the light that was given off/reflected one year ago. Our sun is roughly 8 light minutes away. From the moment that light is created on the sun, it takes about 8 minutes to be visible on earth. Whenever you look at the sun, you are looking at the surface of the sun 8 minutes ago, not the present surface of the sun.
cotsi95
Correct but to say that this picture is 13 billion years old is only true if everything in it is the same distance away from us. Which it isnt. Im not trying to argue or prove anyone wrong i was just stating that light year is unit of distance not time.
