Does East Texas Suck For Tangiers?

Recommended Posts

Alright, I've been acclimating green apple candy, blue gumball and pear for almost four days now. I waft the smell to my face and the scents are dead on. However, if I get a little closer to the shisha it still smells like junk.

Are you supposed to smell the shisha up close, or do a wafting technique to tell if it's ready? I've smoked less than a bowls worth of BGB and GAC because I'll pack it, have great flavor for about a minute, and then it just turns into unbearable flavor.

My setup:

Medium phunnel (packed to the rim)
Three John's Coals
Ice and H20

yangiers should always be packed fairly tight because tobacco conducts heat better that air and tangiers requires good conducting for good flavor.

make sure your hole pateurn is good as well.

BGB and Green Apple Candy was the hardest to acclimate for me. Green Apple Candy till this day about a month and a half in isn't even acclimated yet. But you wont know for sure till you smoke it. It has a bad tobacco smell rather then a soy sauce smell which all my tangiers had none of them ever had a bbq or soy sauce smell they all had a tobacco smell.. Edited by newjacksm

I think your problem is using three CH coals. Coconut coals burn at a higher temperature and since Tangiers is very heat sensitive whole coals tend to burn the shisha very quickly. I would suggest poking larger holes to let in more air as well as only using about 3 half coals.

I've never had good luck down here in San Antonio with any Tangiers except Juicy Peach.

San Antonio weather fluctuates so much in the winter that it makes trying to acclimate tangiers a bitch.

Meh the only months I have any decent luck is july and august, even right now with the 80's one day and the 30's the next its horrible. I'm prolly just gonna make the switch to all lucid even though I'll miss the nic buzz.

Take away the ice and instead use room yemp or slightly warm water (I use slightly warm water myself). This helps to really ramp up the flavor and remove some harshness of Tangiers. Try it!

It's what you're supposed to do biggrin.gif

Well, I smoked the Pear yesterday and it tasted excellent. Just like what a juicy pear is supposed to taste like. I still had three coals on there, but the holes were much larger than the first couple of bowls that I did for BGB and GAC.

I think these other two flavors are just finicky. I did take away the ice with the pear, so that might have helped as well. This is my first experience with Tangiers so I'm just learning the basics as far as that goes.

Fortunately, the humidity hasn't been that bad. I'm smoking exclusively in my apartment so I know that helps with the acclimation. I'll give BGB and GAC another chance soon. If they ever come to the level of Pear I know that I'm in for a treat.

Thanks for the advice. It really helps to have such a great community here on HF. I know there are a lot of Tangiers threads out there, so thanks for all the answers!
