SJ408
I was wondering how those cleaning rods work. Are you supposed to wrap a cloth around it or something? And does it clean better than brushes?
dizzing
eh? i'm not familiar with any cleaning rods other than the brushes you mention. brushes are the only thing i've ever seen marketed for hookah cleaning. if you have a cleaning rod, i'd assume it's like those used for gun cleaning - with a female threaded end. well, if that's the case, you can get wire brush attachments, and attachments with eyes that'll accept cleaning patches, etc [at your local wal-mart or gun store]... otherwise i'd say, yeah, wrapping a cloth on it might do the trick, but be careful not to get too much fabric. i once used a coat hanger and an old piece of t-shirt to clean a hookah, and the cloth got wedged in there like you wouldn't BELIEVE. i think it took me about 30 minutes to get out, and it was the hardest thing i've ever done . anyway, yeah, i'd say if that's the case then wire brush heads would scour better than the typical plastic brushes. plus, using cloth or cleaning patches gets it swabbed cleaner - helps you get a nice shine to it
mushrat
You could get a gun cleaning set..those often have special ends of the rods for your cloth.
DougBurns
On the subject of cleaning: Anyone have any good tips for getting the top part of the stem clean? It's right around the top edge and no matter how hard I scrub and with what, it always seems filthy. Also: Anyone have an extra set of brushes they got from ordering a hookah or something that they want to get rid of? I can't justify paying probably more than the brushes cost in shipping to buy it online.
HookahEnthusiast
all of the rods ive seen thus far are made so that you attach a cleaning cloth of some sort to them and then run them through ur stem and what not....

Lakemonster
Your local gun shop should carry everything you need. Hoses actually vary so different sized "jags" (those are the tips that hold the cloth) may be needed. I have one hose that I can actually use as big as .243 cal nylon brush. But for the most part........ I advise folks to get a cleaning rod and a jag that fits .17HMR or .17WMR. You can most likely get a nylon brush and actually scrub the inside of your hose.... just dont use the brass brushes.
