xgracegalex
I will probally smoke to like some LOTR soundtrack or something. Not something that I like...but it is soothing. I am in a hardcore/scream band so it is pretty much the exact opposite...

Kiwini
Matisyahu. He's a Hasidic Jew who does reggae. That's right. Hasidic--complete with beard and hat. Add that to some hip-hop reggae jams and you have an artist that dominates the local synagogue-going music scene. Based on that, you have to listen to the guy. HookahDuck
I have Matisyahu's live album as well. I listen to everything- reggea is a nice change every once in a while.Has anyone ever heard of Iron & Wine? If you arent a reggea or authentic middle-eastern music fan, give them a shot while smoking. Its a modern, almost folk band thats REALLY relaxing. Spentkustard
Personaly I think everybody should give Matisyahu a listen. Why? Cause his music breeds peace and we all need to be more peacefull these days. When you listen to him its sounds like it was his destiny to sing and write music. When stuff is going bad I just pop in one of his cds and I just get this peacefull feeling though me. Peace

Johnny_Z
LOL yeah, I'll admit it... I never bought any of his CDs, but I do have 6 or 7 Matisyahu songs in my iTunes list. The lyrics can be a bit religious for my taste sometimes, but then again I suppose most reggae is by it's very nature spiritual music. Oh well *shrugs* I do like his sound though and it's good to see someone throwing some fresh ideas into the boring world of depressing emo rock and shallow bubblegum pop thats come to define what we call "modern rock". So right on Matisyahu, keep doin what your doin
Cicada

looking forward to seeing him at coachella this year
haha, I just saw that a certain Madonna is performing at Coachella this year. Not sure how I feel about that.
neither do most people; al ot feel that it's selling otu the indie scene because she is goign to draw such a crowd, even from people who don't like her. no matter what you think, it cant be disupted that she's a legend -- when she goeso n, everyone will go, and take away from the smaller bands who probably make better music; anyway, yeah, some feel that it's selling out the indie music scene because, in previous years, the headliners were big, sure, but the fun of it was going around and finding new, upcoming bands...and the year after appearing at coachella most of those bands blew up -- i love going around finding new music, going home, listening to their stuff, and usually, i end up liking it.but that's what happens when people get a little greedy and try to go mainstream -- it's along the same vein as when someone gets big and 'forgets the little people' that got them where they are. The first few years at coachella were very small, but they had lots of big artists and lots of good music -- it seems, lately that they've been catering to popular music just to draw crowds and revenue -- i remember the first year it was about $20 to get it..and now..like $80 i believe? inflation, sure, but prices wouldnt have to be hiked that high if they didnt try and book such huge acts.in the end, though, it's all about the music. tingjunkie
Can't believe I missed this thread! Had to dig it up.First of all, I own around 450 or so reggae albums. Everything from oldschool Ska up to the latest Danchall. Needless to say, I take my reggae very seriously. This is why I feel comfortable saying...Matisyahu is not reggae. His lyrics are generally positive and uplifting (I guess), and if you enjoy listening to him, then more power to you. Just stop calling him reggae, please. Personally, I think his instrumentation is horribly derivative- like someone listened to a few random (but not even any good) reggae albums, and just boiled them down to the basic boring essentials. Reggae elevator music if you will.I read an interview with him once, and it was painfully obvious that he does not have a very good background knowledge (read: respect) of reggae either. I also heard that before he converted to Hasidic Judaism that he was a stoned out hippie who just followed Phish around the country- can't confirm this and don't even care to.So anyway, if you enjoy Matisyahu, then keep doing so. Nothing wrong with that. Just PLEASE stop calling him reggae. If anyone wants to check out a real reggae album, I would recommmend The Congos: The Heart of the Congos. It will blow your mind, guaranteed.[The preceeding has been a public service announcement paid for by tingjunkie's love of real reggae music. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.]
