If I may say so, Scalliwag, the reason that the U.S.A. is the greatest country in the world is because of people like you.

If you need a distributer, I know this guy who runs Tangiers and distributes some product lines. Let me know. smile.gif

Wow! Coming from one of the folks I idolize that is a helluva nice compliment so mooey ARRRRR!!! Those words definately apply to you my friend.
I will keep that in mind. Tarik has become a good bud so if this particular product gets distributed I will bounce it off him. To get the business kicked off we will do some direct sales and kind of go from there. If Larry can handle shipping from his house for now I got a game plan.
Since so many pieces will be unique I think we should make a site with a gallery and as each piece sells have it drop off the page or show "sold". I have seen art sites setup similar. We will probably at least keep the exotics in that environment. Larry mentioned other materials like acrylics. Anything like that which does not have much variance between pieces would be good candidates for distribution. For now I have to get a big roll ordered and sent to my buddies shop so it don't sit on my porch sad.gif
I definately want to get one in your hands Eric!!! Maybe if you give it a fair and honest review I can call it a promotional expense and write it off? smile.gif I know you'd be honest or you would not say nothing at all but so you know if you thought it sucked I'd expect you yo say so.

I have never given a biased review in my life. My brain doesn't function in that way. I'd be more than happy to give you my notes on it.

I'm with ya on that. smile.gif Don't ask me a question if you resent honest answers you may not want to hear.

I got to meet Larry today. He is a really nice guy and real sharp. He was in management at Motorola until he became disabled. An awful lot of talent in this guy that I hope to put to very good use. He does phenominal scroll art. Really intriquite work. I told him that hookah related art is very popular too. He lives less than 4 miles which makes this really cool and makes me feel very lucky to have found him especially the odd set of circumstances that brought that about.

We made a quick run to the local Woodcraft store and picked up some badass wood for him to work with. We picked up Cherry, Bocote, Mesquite, and something else I forgot. I took him an old handle for him to work off of and how I wanted to do it where the hose connects, which is different from the one in the pic. He knocked out what would be a basic handle out of Cherry and sent me these pics.
I think it looks really nice and it more reference than anything. We will be making them longer and some really cool surprises coming there.

If you guys have pics of any handles that you really like post the pics and we'll let Larry put his spinoff on them. Once he gets some sets made we will make a new thread and post pics of all of them and make a poll for what you guys like best.
I really think the exotics will come out so unique that he will have to make them, then we post pics and sell them as he spins them off. Prices will vary because of so many variables. I want to have basics on up to extreme because I know you guys enough to know that's how you roll wink.gif
He has some amazing pens BTW. I can't write or I'd get a few wink.gif Sorry guys but pricing is still on hold. There are still some things to get setup for these. We want to knock them out fast without sacrificing quality so you guys can get the best bang for the buck and it has to be worth his time and effort of course.

I have played with one of the sample pieces of tubing and between posting and working on herb and sleeping.
I have a good idea that under normal use these hoses will not wear out. Normal use as in not having tug-o-wars, cleaning with gasoline and a lighter, etc.
Remove the ends and soak them in a bowl of water/vinegar, pull it out swing it like a cowboy to dry it out and put the ends back.
For those of you with muli hose setup we'll be making some matched sets as well making sets from the same slab of wood.

awesome idea! only thing i can think of is little leaks in the long run with the wear and tear of regular usage. There is a hose on the market made of a material similar to that, its just not durable at all. I think these will be much much better. I love the flexibility of them!!

Why not make hoses of latex tubing? They're more durable than nylon, and more flexible. I got a hose made of the stuff, and it's a little heavy, but no heavier than a nammor. But it's more flexible than my nammor, by far.

Scalli, I think you wanting the retired, and disabled to lend a hand is not coming across as wrong. In fact I think that for some people, they would enjoy doing something productive again. Alot of elderly people start to feel useless after a while and this would be a nice kick in the cotton pants that they need to feel good about themselves, stuff like that can go along way for someones health. All hail Scalli, inventor, and philanthropist! Keep up the good work.

I think that with the hose not ever getting near it's stress point in normal use that I doubt that will be a problem. Did you see how tight it would flex? ohmy.gif It's well beyond anything I have tried with another hose. As a matter of fact I am curious if anyone here has seen any hose on the market put in that tight a loop and survive?

Two problems I see with latex. One being a lot of people are allergic to latex. http://www.allergyasthma.on.ca/latex1.htm The other is like you say it is heavy.

Thanks, that is a great compliment. I'd like to live up to the guy you just described smile.gif
I'm not sure if Larry will ever chime in on the forum but he told me a lot about his background and it was very successful. He has to deal with a lot of pain and some days are worse than others but he gets a lot done.
I threw a post onto Craigslist looking for someone to make the covers. Hopefully another good person turns up for that.

Both of my lame POS Nammor hoses keep needing duct tape and super glue..

I'm down for one, and keep thinking there Has to be a market for high-quality hoses, and still make a profit at $30 a hose (which local shops sell Nammors)

Well, I won't be the only one anticipating what this is gonna look like. I find it easier to share anticipation knowing at least it's gonna bug the piss out of some others as well. wink.gif
My day job kept me up all flippin night paging me with false alerts on servers crashing that were not. Any system admins out there? This one hates Tivoli monitoring especially when the peeps that configured it can't find their ass with both hands. sad.gif So I'm too tired to get as excited as I would under normal circumstances.

Here is what Larry wrote:
Hi Mike

Yes indeed, serial number one is 99% finished.

Here is what is left to do:
The handle is finished except for the metal grommet. One I purchased is not going to work. I was really afraid of that but I went ahead and got them any way.

The connector end is finished except for cutting it to length. I thought I would wait and let you look at it in case there is something wrong or if you liked it longer. I just naturally made it a little long on purpose.

I set my table saw up today; I cut the Mesquite and the Bocote pieces. One of the Mesquite pieces was not as wide as the other. I did not notice that when we got them. I can probably make that piece into connector ends. We'll see.

I'm in a lot of pain right now but I hope to get better soon. Donna is picking up dinner and I am about to taking a lot of pain meds before it gets way bad.

Talk to you later,
Larry

No pics but I'm better he pushed himself hard today and he's feeling it now. sad.gif
So anyways guys we'll get to see serial number 00001 pretty soon. I think I wanna call the hose line "Pow-Wow". Kinda like Sham-Wow wink.gif Then again when I'm alert and coherant I will probably be wondering who the hell came up with a dumbass name like that! ohmy.gif

Larry is really getting a good feel of what we're wanting on hose handles. He's got some new equipment coming to make them better and faster. He has a new lathe and a duplicator ordered. So for folks needing matching hose sets that will be really nice as will once he gets some popular patterns you guys like.

Here is something of interest. I took 7-1/2" of standard hose with the wire and the same length of the new material and weighed them. The standard hose material weighed 14 grams. The new material weighed 6 grams. Where this comes into importance is more the effect weight has on a hose at the port end. I've always noticed that my hoses wear out where they connect to the port end faster because the weight stresses the area at the port end because the hose comes out of the port and the weight stresses the hose when it tries to bend and come back down. Check some older hoses you have and you will probably feel and possibly see this effect.
Since the new material is between a third and half the weight it has less negative impact.

Larry made a handle out of mesquite and it is killer. We still need to make the handles in sections with decorative sections of other materials. I feel good enough about the materials to put a 5 year limited warranty on them. When I say "limited" that is only because I can't cover dumb mistakes. Normal use though it is covered. And after 5 years (or dumb mistakes) the hose sections will be available.
In effect we're putting out a hose that will last longer than you. They will be about a foot longer than advertised so if you screw up near the end you can trim it a bit and put it back together and be good as new. A screw up in the middle? No problem. I will give a spice kit to fix that and you won't be able to tell it because the cover will hide the fix. As a matter of fact as long as you are capable of making a nice clean cut you won't even notice the splice with the cover off. smile.gif
Because the handles and ends are custom made these won't compete with the cheapest hoses on the market in price but I told Larry I would rather make the best damn hose on the market.
It has to be a win-win for everybody and I don't expect Larry to not get a good return for good work.
I know everybody wants the best bang for the buck too as well as assurances that the product they buy is backed up. Larry and I both take great pride in our work which is one of the reasons we have hit it off so well. He's committed his limited resources into this project which means I have to take care of him and you guys.

So after thinking it all out I thought about the warranty idea and think it is a good way for him to sell more handles and you guys to be more confident in our products. I have some software developer friends I'm in talks with to have come up with a custom application I think you guys will love. It's gonna be called "hose builder".
There will be a website with pictures of different woods and various material and you click on pieces and each time you click a pick it will add that to a section of the handle. When you get it "built" you click submit and can order it. That along with pages of pre-made hoses with fixed prices.
I think that is an idea that you guys if nothing else will just have a field day playing with? If that works out then we'll do the same thing on the Agentscot style hookahs. Clicking bottles and stems and ? and custom designing hookahs from a selection of materials. That would be called "Hookah Builder".
These are just a couple more ideas to get you guys involved in design and take pride in "your" work. Wadda ya think?

Scalli and Larry you guys are on the right track, very nice job.

So when you say sections do you mean sections of different woods and patterns that can be connected into a master hose handle? So that for example I could have Cherry and Mesquite alternating? AWESOME. If you had some acrylic and metal pieces (other materials as you mentioned) to link the sections of wood together that would just be badass.

Also I was at a local shop the other day and I noticed some beautiful wood hoses that were attached to the typical crappy hose material. The handles were about a foot long comparable to a nammor or KM hose. More bulgy and ornate than what has been shown here so far (which is beautiful). Any chance of making a comparatively long handle? I wish I had a pic to show, think a fancy chair leg or banister rail sized down and made into a tapered hose handle. Essentially longer and thicker than the prototypes so far.

Anyway, if you guys can pull this off and I'm sure you will I think you might have a succesfull product on your hands smile.gif Good work and great idea.

We all love customization here on HF and this is steppin it the Hell up.

On that note we have a few graphic designers on this site (self included) and I think if we put some work into it we could come up with a cool professional logo for you. I think Scalliwag suits a line of products just fine by the way. "Hey you check out that new Scalliwag hose?" It could just be that I like pirates...
