Scalliwag
Yes GNR, the material sections are exactly like you said. Most hose handles I think will be right at 1 foot long, 1 inch diameter. Most of the sections would be 3 inches or less. Here are a couple of the materials I want to see.
Giant Ninja Robot
OMG Scalli these are going to be so damn classy if you can incorporate those pen materials. Are those some of the pens that Larry made?Seriously these are going to make other "deluxe" hoses look like Nerf toys. Thanks for all the updating, fun to be in on this. wpw36
scalli you should contact a glass blower and maybe do some glass inlays or even some in marble

Larry has some pens just like those but with a different colored acrylic. His are every bit as nice though. QUOTE (wpw36 @ Mar 23 2009, 10:55 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>scalli you should contact a glass blower and maybe do some glass inlays or even some in marbleI'm not sure I know what inlaid glass is but it soulnds interesting. If you mean inlaid like they do with guitars I'm not real sure how they coud use glass. But I see something new everyday Now marble, there is acrylic that looks just like marble but without the tendency to shatter when you try and work it thin. The handles will have a 6063 aircraft aluminum liner tube. So I will be able to make some curvature for those that want that. The trick to that is that where the curve is at it will take shorter sections and the ends will have to be shaped so that they butt against each other nicely throughout the transition. That would add to the cost so it just depends on if you really want that. I would use some sort of flexible material for that but I cannot think of anything that would not look cheap. The ones I've seen that were curved had a junky look to them. I could see maybe cross drilling some acrylic from two angles and cut it so it looks curved but trying to round it would be a bitch and leaving it squarish might look a bit stupid. So I dunno know on that theory just yet.
Scalliwag
I met a lady named Diane on the way home from work who is a seamstress with years of experience. I gave her a hose cover and she was like "no problem". We swiftly picked out a couple of fabrics that look really nice and so she is going to make up some hose covers and make sure I like them and we'll go from there. I was damn happy to get that going. Larry is working on handles and we were soon to be at a standstill. Once she gets some cover to me and Larry gets some handles I can take pics of what we have so far and we can get some input from you guys as well as let peeps order what is finished. The first hose is mine.... for test purposes of course!
Giant Ninja Robot
PROGRESS!Sounds good, so are these not going to be stitched like KM hookahs then? I'm wondering how loose/tight the fabric cover is going to be assuming it'll be removable I guess. Can't wait for pics!

I like them more for several reasons, different colors for different hookahs, and in this case you can pull the ends and the cover off and soak the tubing without damage to anything that really shouldn't get wet. Plus they look nicer to me at least
gunsboy
How much?I want order a really long hose. I am talking about really long one, like 5-20 meters .I have few scenarios where the hookah would be placed in one room and the smokers are in a different room/apartment.Also a couple of normal size ones. Damn it seems like the smoke would be horribly stale by the time it got to you. I would have to figure that one out. Right now I'm waiting on seeing what Larry makes when it comes to the handles and what he will charge. They are going to vary but we still have not got one to go off of yet.Right now he is working on a handle from bocote and turquoise. MINE MINE MINE!!!! I think it is going to be gorgeous. The handle is a foot long. So picture these two comined in sections to make a handle.
gunsboy
Cool. I can't wait to order my first customized Scalliwag Hose.I visited someone in Saudi Arabia where a bunch of hookahs were outside the room. He was rich and had someone to serve drinks and setup the hookahs and manage coals. First hit too strong but then I got adjusted to it and it was a good smoking experience. My 10-years plan:1- Buy Scalli's 20 meter hose2- Get Rich 3- Have servants 4- Smoke hookah. I think we'll make a "signature series" with a short section of clear acrylic over the polished aluminum and on the aluminum Larry would sign one side and me on the other. This pic is not polished but it will give you an idea of the section I'm talking about. These will also be numbered. Larry's new lathe and duplicator will be delivered tomorrow. We're very excited about it. In usual "Scalliwag" fashion I made him a fixture attachment for it to hold all the sections of a handle at one time to help speed the turning and polishing process so he is ready to hit the ground running. Diane should be knocking out covers. She actually lives close to Abilene and comes to town on Tuesdays and Wednesdays but next week she is not coming so she is shipping me the first covers. I will see if she can put a little sig on the covers too Edited March 26, 2009 by Scalliwag
Victim026
Sign me up for a few as well, do you have any general idea on pricing yet? And oh god I hope you can get your hands on some nice spalted maple to make some.
Victim026
Oh I've got one more question for ya when it comes to custom hoses, if we were to provide the wood would it be possible for you to make them into hose handles? I've ordered from this place before and I would have no problem ordering the wood for my personal handles...http://www.turningblanks.net/servlet/the-O...anks/Categories

And oh god I hope you can get your hands on some nice spalted maple to make some.I want Larry to get this new setup running and see how quick he can make the handles before I make an attempt to do that. Right now that is the great unknown. I don't see the covers impacting much at all. I *think* he has some pens he did in spalted maple. That and birdseye maple are gorgeous. He also has some olivewood blanks coming in that will be some incredible stuff as well.I want him to also make some matching stems for the Agentscot style hookahs. So basically the stem will have the same pattern as the handles but just a tad oversized from the handles. I have a friend named Travis and his wanting to help build those so I can get in gear on the herb project as well as Travis will help me with the herb project as well. He's a good friend and has gobs of energy and ambition and will be one of the first fulltime peeps for those type projects. He does not mind repetitive shit and has excellelent focus and will be an excellent asset on areas I lack. A whole lot of things going on right now and the right folks falling into place is a huge reilief for me. I've always said if/when I get something like this going that I have to find good folks and take damn good care of them. Ross Perot had a philosy to find the best people at whatever venture he went into and his job was to keep them happy and make sure they know they are appreciated. It seems like an excellent concept that seems to be VERY rare unfortunately. Usually it's peeps working their asses off and losing their retirements and all this bad shit that they get blindsided by later.I don't ever want to forget the feeling after 10 years of being handed a box to gather my personal belongings and getting escorted out the door. Being told it's nothing personal, it's just numbers. People are more than numbers. If somebody sucks they should get marched out. But never because they got so many merit raises for their work that they keep others making less. Uggggh, touchy subject for me obviously

Maybe check with him and see what size blank he would want to work with as well, they come in a few different sizes from that site and I'm not sure exactly how much he would need to make both ends of the hose. We can rip anything bigger down. As far as how much you need depends on design. If it's all wood then whatever length you want the handle and 4 to 5 inches for the port end. Any acrylic or metal sections reduce the wood length needed proportionately. That is a great site BTW!!! Excellent find. I sent Larry the link. Victim026
Hmm looks like once you get things nailed down then I'll be placing an order using some of this wood.
