obey
I tried out my new KM this morning and the results were bad. I was getting basically no smoke.Set up:Two CH coalsphunnel with two rings of holes around the outside and sprinkled the tobacco inAF MintThis was my first time using a phunnel, so I don't know if it was that i packed it wrong or what. But i also tried a crappy clay bowl that came with it, and had the same results.Note sure what the problem is, could just be a poorly packed phunnel and crappy clay bowl. All my other bowls are back at college, going back tomorrow, so I will test them out.
SilentBob
might be a water issue. if you take the bowl and hose off, lightly breathe in directly on the hose port and it should gargle. too much/too little water = no smoke
obey
at first i thought i had too much water (it was pretty high above the stem, like 3-4 inches), so i poured some out but that hardly affected the smoke.
SilentBob
is it gargling as it should when you try to take a hit? is it thoroughly cleaned inside? some people have had build up inside their new KM's
SmokinMoose
Make sure there is a ball bearing the purge valve.
Tati
How was the pull?
SimplexCoda
it could be packing, but im not sure with out knowing how you've packed it. But i would agree with checking to see if there is a bearing in the purge valve would be a good place to start. If so then i would say check your packing. obey
yeah checking for a ball bearing was one of the first things i did when i bought it, and there is one.there is gargling when i take a hitthe stem is clean and clear (unlike how it was when i bought it)the pull was smoothi can only think it;s that i am a phunnel packing noob lol. ill try with my QT bowl tomorrow when i get back to school Edited March 14, 2009 by obey
SimplexCoda
i sounds like a good idea. I typically dont smoke a new pipe and a new bowl at the same time, just cause im not sure how either will act, so i try to smoke with at least one thing that i know how its gonna smoke. But i hope you get it figured out.
SuburbanSmoker
lol sounds like your purge valve doesnt have a ball in it or you have a leak between a connection point/hole in the hose. thats what it souinds like to me.
Click
With KMs you can put as much water as you want to the point where the water nearly gets sucked up into the hose. So I doubt it was too much water. Probably just got to practice packing the phunnel.
Sonthert
I think somebody's using a phunnel bowl with a sprinkle of tobacco in, but no mod. My guess is, if this is true, the lack of tobacco is allowing the foil to be sucked down over the phunnel, allowing air to pass through the phunnel, but stopping smoke from entering the phunnel. JDHarding
When I pack a phunnel, no matter what shisha it is, I use a fork to mix the shisha first, then I use the fork to shovel the shisha into the phunnel. I pack it down somewhat tightly to just above the level of the center hole. If it isn't at least this high, there probably won't be much flavor. And 2 coals is a good amount to use, especially with John's coals, since they're so big. Make sure they're RED HOT when you put them on. Poke 2 rings of holes around the outside rim of the bowl, no center hole. Phunnels don't need the center hole poked.First pull should have quite a lot of smoke. If it doesn't, something else is wrong.Water level should be between 1/2 inch to 1 inch above the bottom of the downstem. I got mine at 3/4 inch with a diffuser attached to the bottom. Pulls like a charm.
antouwan
just sounds like some wicked air leak/fail at sealing. is everything tip top with your bowl, stem/base, and hose grommets?

Shnordle
QUOTE (Codename067 @ Mar 14 2009, 03:08 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Your problem lies in your packing method. He has spoken.Er yea, agreed. With phunnel bowls, the goal is to not make it perfect. I take a pinch of shisha, put it in. Take another pinch, and lay it next to the other pinch until the bowl is full. Also, I have had my best hookah sessions when the shisha actually is a little higher then the brim of the bowl. Almost like packing tangiers, just not as exagerated. I also recommend 3 coals. Usually takes me like 6-8 pulls to start getting smoke and then an extra one or two to get mad smoke. I am using a 32" KM ice, so I was just figuring it took several pulls to get smoke from a hookah of this size.Obey- may want to try the tea light mod, it worked wonders for me and is cheap. Also, I always use at least 3 CH coals on my phunnel bowl, sometimes 4 once the coals get small. I also noticed that the juicier baccy never seems to give good clouds, might try taking a paper towel and drying the shisha, tho the flavor may lack a bit. Maybe I should try a different brand. I even use a phunnel+tea light mod, 3 CH instant coals, and really shitty thin foil (so thin that if I try and get the foil very tight on the bowl it rips). Kinda helps a bit when I dry the shisha out, but then I lose some flavor.

MechAnt
Check for leaks. I used a leaky hose once, quite embarrassing. Also, since that was your first time using a phunnel, keep trying and even smoke a bowl with a regular egyptian bowl and see how well that smokes. I only use phunnel once in a while anyway.
