Can't Get Any Flavor Out Of Tangiers

Recommended Posts

I have tried vanilla, kashmir cherry, and apple. They've all been sitting spread-out on tinfoils in my room where I smoke for the past two weeks. I am positive that it's an acclimation problem, because the smoke and everything else is great (not harsh or thin), just zero flavor.

I use a small tangiers phunnel bowl, 2 coco naras, and lots of big holes poked all the way to the bottom. I also pack the shisha tightly, a little over the top.

PS. I am in vancouver, BC, Canada (pacific)

I live in the Seattle area, which is basically the same climate since we only live like an hour and a half apart. I haven't tried the vanilla or apple, but K-Cherry acclimated in no time at all.

Not sure what the problem may be. It sounds like you have the right idea with the packing and such. Is this your first try with Tangiers, or have you had successful runs in the past?

Though this method is suggested for a diff. climate, its worth a shot. You have nothing to lose! Hah.

I think throwing it in the oven is the worst possible thing to do to try to acclimate it the first time. I usually tell people to put it in the freezer for a day or two if they are having trouble acclimating it (if its dry where they are). because the damp->dry humidity thing is the worst transition. Where dry-> damp is a little better. Ovens are warm and damp. The damp being the problem. You add additional moisture content to the tobacco and are driving it damp-> dry continuously. Also, more volatile flavors will be driven off more strongly in more heat making the flavors/aroma weaker, notably the fruity components of the flavor. BGB does smell a little odd. Some people don't like the aroma or the flavor at all...I guess that's true for any flavor.

try this
place the tang in a large collander-
add a balloon blown up at midnight on a full moon-
hold a turkey feather in your left hand-
an agate crystal in your right hand-
dance on one foot-
take a big whiff of your shisha-
spin 3 times on the opposite foot-
cast a hexagram with the agate while holding turkey feather in the direction of the moon-
and chant...
tangierius returnus flavorium immediatum damnittus!
3 times-

try that and let us know if it worked or not.

ive tried this method....it doesnt work. wallbash.gif

ya sounds like your packing correctly and everything. id try adding another coal to see what the additional heat will do. also what does the shisha smell like before you load the bowl? does is smell like the flavors name, or nasty?

i havent had a problem with flavor with tanjiers, but im in a different climate

I've got the same problem, I bought a small container of Horchata in downtown chicago, and it smelt good but I let it acclimate for a few days and it smells very strong like cinnamon, so its obviously acclimated. I pack it tightly in my small tangiers bowl, 1 layer of Reynolds foil, 2 cocos. The smoke it a bit harsh, not much smoke and no flavor at all. I just ordered 750g of tangiers from hookah john yesterday, and i hope this doesnt happen to those because i would be quite sad sad.gif

if there's thick smoke, but no flavor..there may be too much heat. drop the heat down some, either by flipping coals on their edges or moving them to the outside if they're not there already. too much heat can kill flavor.

i don't think you're underpacking since you said you're packing it tightly. so, try backing off the heat little by little and see what happens.

You may have sent all the flavors away. (some are a bit more volitile than others), I find that with tangiers its not the packing that is important it is just the acclimation. The packing is just a quick and dirty process. Here is what I do:
1) Dump the shisha into a closable container.
2) Use weather.com to see your local humidity (I have it on my igoogle homepage so its easy)
3) A few hours before you smoke check your humidity (in relation to how humid it was the last time you smoked) [i have my tangy acclimated to a baseline humidity of about 30%]
4) Crack open your tub and just let it sit where you plan on smoking stirring it about an hour or so (The greater the humidity difference the longer you need to acclimate)
5) about 20 mins before you are going to smoke take the square of foil you plan on wrapping your bowl with and place a bowls worth of tangy on it. Leave the rest in the tub, close it and keep it near.
6) Pack your bowl. Do it the way snoopy does. Do it quick and dont think about it because you messing around with it is what will mess you up. If you have excess chuck it back in the tub.
7)Wrap, Poke Holes, place coals, let sit for 5mins, and enjoy!

I tried leaving it in the freezer and re-acclimating to no avail.

Thanks. I will follow these steps for the next session. Humidity where I am changes quite often. Here's the predicted humidity for the next 24 hours (overnight, morning, afternoon, evening):
93% 85% 71% 93%

dont use cold or ice water

I've been using cold tap water with no ice. I'll try warmer water. Thanks

Make sure you mix up the juices really good.

Dont be afraid to put sopping wet shisha in there.

If it smells great just sitting there, it should taste great.

dont use cold water. luke warm works best for me.

if you're getting good smoke and no flavor, reduce the heat a little.

Personally, when that happens what I do is:

place the tang in a large collander-
add a blue balloon blown up at midnight on a full moon-
hold a duck feather in your left hand-
an agate crystal in your right hand-
dance on one foot-
take a big whiff of your shisha-
spin 3 times on the opposite foot-
cast a hexagram with the agate while holding duck feather in the direction of the moon-
and chant...

Yeah, so, I really am at a loss. I remember the Kashmir Fiend guy from PA used to tell me similar things, he said it happened only in the winter.

I don't think its an acclimation problem per se. You don't put ice in the water, right? How do they smell? Did you squeeze all the juice out of the bag? Were the bags in good condition? Where did you buy the tobacco? What type of packaging did the tobacco come in? I can't believe the weather thing is that big a deal. I have seen humidity shock reactions where the smoke was flavorless for a short period, but it generally involved a sudden increase in temperature and humidity to like tropical conditions. Does the heat/air conditioning run 24/7 in your place? What type of heating is it? Do you have a radiator in your room or radiant heat in your house? What time of day do you smoke?

I'm probably going to have you send it back and replace it for you. See if that changes anything.

The humidity changing day by day is why I acclimate everytime I smoke. I don't just leave it all in the open and pluck off a bowls worth.

Relative humidity change does not necessarily affect the tobacco. You can have a large relative humidity change without the actual moisture content of the air changing at all. You are most likely wasting a lot of time aclimating for no reason at all.
