Af Watermelon

Recommended Posts

Well I'm smoking AF watermelon and the flavor is a joke. It also has a heavy chemical taste to it. I tried 2 Coco coals on my small phunnel, and now 3 Jap Canarys, and it's just garbage. Maybe I'm spoiled on Tangiers, I don't know, but AF is no good anymore. I think I'll stick to Tang and Nakhla from now on. sleep.gif

I've been going through a nakhla/tangiers renaissance lately, but AF watermelon is still one I come back to. For whatever reason that one for me hasn't been as chemically/artificial/dye-laden as the rest, maybe I just got a good batch or something...

I dunno. Mine has been sitting in a tub and still seems to have dried out a lot, and when smoked it's just no good. There's some sweet taste, that I like, but it's not very strong. It also seems to burn easily. 2 cocos was too much, 3 Jap canarys was too much when right off the burner, so I had to wait a while before I put the 3 on there. I put quite a lot of shisha in the phunnel, so I don't know what's wrong.

I am getting a little buzzed on it, so I guess that's a plus. tongue.gif

Yea mine is pretty heat sensitive as well, and also had dried out a bit... i smoked it in an egyptian and didn't have any molasses leaking down the stem, lol. I'd say if it's as dried up as mine, pack it a lot looser, and two CH coals was just enough heat-wise so 2 cocos should be fine.. just adjust hole pattern and pack density and it'll come together smile.gif

hah, if you're smoking tangiers and nakhla and getting buzzed off af... something's wrong lol

I'm in agreement with the OP here. Tastes artificial, and way too sweet. The only watermelon-flavor I've really enjoyed is the one from Tangiers. Too bad it's impossible to smoke Tangiers in this time of the year in Norway.

I tried AF watermelon and it was way way too sweet to me. I mean it tasted like sweet air, no other flavor to me. And the same with their strawberry and vanilla, so ill stay away from it.

Yeah, exactly! It just tastes like sweet air with a hint of chemicals. Nasty stuff. But it was pretty dry, too. Maybe some honey and glycerine would have helped things.

Dumped out the Watermelon.. Nakhla Double Apple is in the bowl now.

*leans back* Ah.. Nakhla is still king..

Now talk about a bad flavor.. nakhla DA did not last more than 20 minutes in my collection. You must be an anise fan...

Nakhla DA is one of the DA-flavors with the least taste of anise. Personally I have to acclimate it a while to get it perfect. I don't know why so many people think of acclimation as a "Tangiers-only" phenomenon. Try exposing it to the climate you smoke in for a few hours before you smoke.

I acclimated mine for about 48 hours before I smoked, and I still had to remove the bowl after the first set of coals expired. I thought the anise was even worse than AF's, personally...

They changed the cut- which makes the tobacco smoke harsh unless you have 1 coal on there (then there's no flavor/smoke), and went cheap on the flavors - White Grape, prime example.

But people still buy it... the cut is obviously different; smaller, mushier.

Yea my watermelon was produced in jan '07, maybe that's the difference... but i got teh impression that the bad reviews started coming even before then, no?

Sounds like there is too much glycerin in it already... I have had problems with smaller amounts (100g Starbuzz, and 50g packs) that have too much glycerin somehow and make it taste chemically or soapy.

If it's not that then maybe it is just a flavor that wont sit well with you, but does just fine for others.

Well the older and good AF Watermelon was red and now it's a greenish brown.  Not sure what they changed but they switched to a fully automated manufacturing and packaging line to ensure consistency.  Looks like it actually messed shit up.

I have an older red 250 tub produced i think in late 07 or early 08 and have had the EXACT same problems as the OP with it.

I acclimated mine for about 12 hours and it got much better but is still chemical at times and is really hard to smoke alone.

Boo to AF. I bought 10 tubs just as the quality was coming down and got burned on 4 of the ten.

I agree with you JD. All I know is that watermelon used to be good but then it seemed to get harsh REALLY quick and I think its just the flavor tasting weird I dunno. The only thing i buy now that's AF is Grape, DA and Esk. Apple because I have yet to have issues with it.
