Scoop
If you wikipedia bagasse, you see it says it has been associated with pulmonary fibrosis. No source of course.... I began to look into it.. "These studies in pulmonary function, together with the evidence pathologically of residual damage, support clearly the contention that bagassosis produces chronic prolonged functional and tissue changes which in some patients may become clinically significant." Bagasse Disease of the Lungs -- After 25 Years William A. Sodeman DOI 10.1378/chest.52.4.505 Dis Chest 1967;52;505-507 "Bagasse has been implicated as one of the causative agents in extrinsic allergic alveolitis, hpersensitising pnemonitis or airway and lung dysfunction. The presence of a huge bagasse dump adjacent to a residential area has raised concern amongst residents who have experienced chronic flu like symptoms and coughing." LUNG FUNCTION OF BAGASE EXPOSED RESIDENTS Does Exposure to Bagasse alter lung function? Puckree T and Lin J Department of Physiotherapy, School of Physiotherapy, Sport Science and Optometry, University of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa Journal of Respiratory Care and Applied Technology "An account is given of 11 cases of acute bronchiolitis and pneumonia arising from the inhalation of bagasse dust. One of these cases was fatal. Severe dyspnoea, cough with scanty sputum and occasional haemoptysis were the usual symptoms. There was a characteristic x-ray appearance which showed a miliary mottling scattered throughout both lungs with heavy shadows at the hilum. Reference is made to 14 similar cases described in the literature, among which there was also one death. The aetiology is uncertain but the disease was most likely caused by bagasse dust. Two workers who had been in contact with the bagasse developed extensive fibrosis of lung, and one of these subsequently died." Bronchiolitis Resulting from the Handling of Bagasse Donald Hunter and Kenneth M. A. Perry doi:10.1136/oem.3.2.64 Occup. Environ. Med. 1946;3;64-74 There are tons and tons of studies (if you have database access, go to scholar.google.com and type in bagassosis, or bagasse lung, anything with that idea and you'll find tons). Obviously this is not from smoking bagasse...but rather exposure. it is my feeling that you are a guniea pig if you smoke this stuff. if inhaling the dust from it causes lung problems, smoking it seems like a bad idea to me. Sonthert
Yeah, the largest risk of hookah smoking is in the charcoal. That hasn't changed with the sugar cane slough. That's all wonderful, but they're talking about breathing in the shit as far as sugar-cane processors. My grandfather died of it, too, its called Farmer's lung if you're a farmer. Breathing in all that fine plant particulate is damaging to the lungs. I don't think that necessarily applies to hookah products. Tobacco dust does the same thing. You're not breathing the dust in, so I don't think it applies, Boris. If you breath any particulate long enough it causes a fibrosis-like syndrome. I found PAHs were present but that seems that any biomass burning would release those as well.
Sonthert
Its not the temperature as much as the airborne dust particles.
