i light the coal up and put it on the left side of the bowl. after about 25 minutes i move it to the other side and smoke that for another 25. by this time my coal has diminished a lot and i barely have any to finish the middle off. is that normal? and should i light up another coal?

Depending on the coal you are using, that sounds about right. My coals usually last me right around 45 minutes. Its usually worth lighting another in my opinion too. I tend to get right about an hour and a half out of an egyptian bowl and use 2-4 coals per session.

You must be using a small bowl if you only use on coal. but i usualy swap out coals about an hour in. 45-hour is normal

Yes, try another coal, see what happens.

My coals typically last much shorter. I typically use 4 to 5 33mm 3K QL coals per bowl. (2 at a time)

what kind of coals are you using? what kind of bowl?
if the flavor is still good keep putting coals on as needed.

yep...depending on the bowl and how you pack, the bowl may outlast your coals. on my small phunnel with Lucid, i go through about 8-10 coals (in 2 hours) and still have some good shisha left over... but, then again...i'm outside with no windcover.
