How High In Your Phunnels

This is how I have always packed my phunnels and have always had phenomenal results. But i noticed with the mini, i get 2 rounds of coals. (as opposed to the small which can handle 4 rounds easily) I'd like to just smoke 1 round and have the bowl be toast. Also note this is with fusion so i just lightly drop it in there til it is a tiny bit higher than the rim, then use my palm to pack it down lightly, it's not heavy and tight like tangiers/nakhla at all, so I expect the shorter duration. Anyways, does anyone pack their phunnels lower and still get awesome results, good flavor, and clouds?. If so then i would be able to pack less and smoke 1 round of coals (1 hour give or take) and have the bowl be cooked. Back in the day i had tried a lot less shisha and the results were bad so ... just wondering if anyone has had success packing less than this :





And don't say to dump the bad and save the good, I have done it in the past and towards the end of the tub it just gets nasty.

And don't say to just add more shisha on top and keep smoking next time, b/c i like to switch up flavors each time.

Matt I have been thinking about playing with my levels on the mini phunnel because I over pack on the small for most stuff, but it doesn't work as well on the mini.

I will tell you this though, Scalli was packing a little under the rim like 1/8 - 1/4" when we were smoking his herbal, and Massive clouds. He also used a hole pattern with the holes just punched where the coals sit. (JFTR don't try that on Tangiers).

yeah i could do that, but if i remember correctly, which i probably don't i think the mini is too small and the mod sticks up against the shisha, but i definitely could be wrong.

Also i was hoping since we got mini's i could get away with not dealing with other things to have to buy/use and have to clean.

But as a last resort if it does in fact work that is what i will do.

ok cool, so it works with a normal phunnel, now i guess i needa just try it with a mini. I just had the feeling since the mini does hold a lot and i mean a lot less than the small, under packing like that would yield a low amount of shisha for the size of the bowl, and may not be able to produce big clouds. I mean i guess i should just try it out, but i can't stand getting shitty sessions so i was trying to avoid that.

I've noticed (at least with my particular mini) that I've always had to pack it pretty dense in order to get good smoke. And believe you me, I DO get good smoke from it. I've tried "underpacking" it a couple times, but it just does not work until i go all out. I've so far packed with SB, Layalina, and Salaam.

Granted, this is my first and only phunnel, so maybe my sheer noobness is a factor to be considered.

Typically, the shisha is right to the rim of the bowl, but packed down quite a bit. Longest session I've had that I've packed has been a couple hours, with plenty of unburnt shisha below the top layer. I tend to reuse it, but I think you stated already you don't like doing that, so....

i pack my small phunnel very loosely and a little under the rim. i use AF. the smoke is very thick and it lasts for 3 rounds of 3 cocos easy (probably last for 4 sessions, but i want a change by then usually). i don't know about the mini phunnel though, i've been lurking around the forum all day and the consensus is that the heat management is noticeably different.

and as for not wanting to risk a shitty session: nobody <i>wants</i> to have a shitty session, but sometimes you have to risk a small time of shaky sessions for a future of solid sessions.

I get good sessions as is now, just was hoping i could rule it one way or the other and not have to find out for myself if someone has already experienced it.

All I've been smoking since I got my minis is tangy and Naklah. And I do the whole overpack thing like you are supposed to for tangiers with the both of them. I did smoke some Af and what I do is I first just chuck some of the shisha on the foil so the juices get on the side that will be in direct contact with the bowl (shiny side). Then I put the tobacco about 1/16-1/8" below the rim. I wrap the bowl shiny side down and place coals and let it sit for a bit. (the juices on the foil will burn sort of and stick to the bowl real well. And this has always given me good results. And as far as your observation on the shorter times......wasnt that the point of the minis?

Yes and No. He is making it, and first round was preordered through MNH. Hopefully will be shipped out soon.

I do this with my Tangiers on my Mini all the time! just have to be careful cause the coals cover so much area and you can easily make it really really harsh ( like all coals ). Takes getting used to but it wastes damn near nothing and tastes great!

Anything besides tangiers I'm to the top (fusion, AF etc), and its fine for 2 or 2.5 rounds of coals.

Tangiers I pack it to hell (videos coming when I get time to edit the ~6 gigs), and get 3 rounds of coals.


Fusion and starbuzz burn quick in my opinion, but still works better to fill it to the foil.

Leaving the space just allows the bowl to cook the shisa quicker.

There was that one guy who would pack half a phunnel I don't know where the post is. Maybe in the how to section. But my dad would underpack the phunnel an it would work fine.
