Troubled Sleep

I feel you on not being able to sleep, I suffered from insomnia and sleep apena for quite a while. Still have some insomnia too. Looks like everyone has given some great suggestions so here's mine.

1) The melatonin is a great method, and it's one of the major methods suggested by health experts

2) Turn your clock face down or cover it up. Knowing you need to go to sleep and being able to see the time is counter productive, it makes you stress out even more and keeps you up even longer.

3) The stretching method Stuie mentioned is also a great idea. You can lay in bed and concentrate on tensing every muscle in your body from toe to head, it's relaxing.

4) Not sure how you go to sleep, but cut off the radio or tv if you normally watch them while falling asleep, they can lead to really fucked up dreams. (although the history channel can be relaxing when it's a monotone narrated program)

5) if you don't usually listen to music or watch tv then try putting some relaxing music on your ipod/mp3 player. I've got a nice collection of Binaural Beats that are used scientifically to alter your brain waves. While some say it's BS no matter what you think it'll either alter your brain waves or work like a white noise machine, lulling your brain to sleep

6) Meditation is a great method, even if it's laying in bed attempting to clear your mind. You can also do the cliche "Ohm" sound. By doing it, it resonates within your body and gives your brain a singular object to focus on.

7) Lavender and vanilla oils are relaxing as well

8) Dreams are normally your brain filing away everything from the day just in a jumbled order. So figure out what's causing the dreams and try to prevent it.

Just a few suggestions, hope they help.

I would go with 5HTP over melatonin, as the 5-hydroxytryptophan is an amino acid and not a mono-amine, it won't get vaporized instantly by mono-amine oxidase. That, and I've taken it before with good results (but could be due to placebo effect).
