My Conventional Knowledge...

Recommended Posts

I've been smoking with some new friends who have been prepping their hookahs contrary to my common, conventional knowledge, and the bowls have been amazing! Some of the best I've ever had.

Some of the things they've been doing:

1 - Refrigerating their shisha
2 - Using ice chambers
3 - Over packing their bowls
4 - Using more coal
5 - Using double layered foil

I've always heard that refrigerating shisha shortens the shelf life and makes it harder to start and smoke, but this hasn't seems to be the case. The bowls start great and are good all the way thru

I've also always heard that ice chambers are generally useless and their effect negligible. I've noticed, after smoking my non-ice chambered hookah, that the ice chamber really cools is off and makes the bowl smoother.

They've over packed the bowls, which I've heard and experienced makes the bowl harsh, but it hasn't at all.

They've used more coal than I thought necessary, but they bowls haven't gotten harsh.

The double layer foil hasn't had a noticeable effect, but it's interesting, nonetheless.

What do you guys think?

fridge is a bad idea

Refridgeration separates the flavor and binding agents from the tobacco. If you smoke it within a month, you might not notice it, but it's happening. Ever notice how food doesn't last forever in the fridge?

The only thing that strikes me as odd is the refrigerating part. Over packing wont make it harsh at all. Adding a little more coal will typically get things goin nice, up to a point. You gotta know the point or else it will get harsh. But really everything sounds pretty normal to me like i say except the fridgorating part.

So before I started reading this forum I stored my shisha in the fridge. Now that I know better, do you guys think I should take the shisha in the fridge and just leave it outside or will this make it worse?

no idea. but i'm thinking, if you take it out and go through the acclimation process (open container + stirring occasionally) all the stuff that separated will re-absorb into the tobacco?

the fridge sounds bad man it probably isn't doing anything but shortening the life of the shisha.

As far as the overpacking it's handy for phunnel bowls esp and the foil is probably what's making them use more coals. The only thing I'd recommend they do is overpacking slightly more than you think you need.

1. If you have a high-water content tobacco, putting it a dry environment like a refrigerator will make it dry out faster.
2. Not a fan.
3. Probably the most important of the five you listed.
4. Not bad...can e a problem if taken to excess. Coal quantity is determined largely by the brand in question.
5. Irrelevant.

OK so I too have had fanTAStic bowls from friends who overpack, however when I try I just burn the shit out of my bowls.

Advice on overpacking "properly" to get huge clouds without burning? Maybe smaller holes in the foil than normal?

MUST HAVE BIGGEST CLOUDS POSSIBLE!

what kind of coals are u using gnr? I find when overpacking if you have to much heat in one spot it will roast it, you need to break up your coals and spread the heat around the bowl. For my mini phunnel i take 2 cocos crack em in half and put 1/4th on each corner of the bowl making a square (4 total pieces) with my egyptian i use a total of 3 pieces or 1.5 cocos, do this with overpacking and u will get massive clouds!

Hope this helps, but can't help much til i know what coals you use.

I thought about putting that in there lol.

I use exoticas so I'm thinking if I break them into small squares and use 3-4 of the small pieces it should be cool? I'm actually gonna try that right now.

Any other advice?
