Stuie
That little black lab mix is Coda.We got Coda as a puppy and my wife and took him in and worked with him constantly. After tons of many hours and dollars Coda got his AKC Canine Good Citizen Certification. Soon we were about to work on getting him certified as a Therapy Dog, we had to work on him with kids so it would take a while. (Kids scared him).My wife was slightly allergic to him, but not to bad. Then she got pregnant. Then her allergy to him exploded. So bad she was taking her normal inhaler and her rescue inhaler several times a day. This couldn't continue so we had to give him up. We ended up giving him to a nurse and her family who said she wanted him for that reason. So we thought wonderful, it's a great match. We gave her a sheet telling everything he has been through, his certification, his microchip information to reregister him, and our contact information, so if there was any reason she decided she didn't want him we would take on the task of placing him again, No Questions Asked. This was back in October.Today at work amongst my new job drowning in stuff to do to keep up with I get a call from the humane society 2 counties over. They apparently moved to Dallas and left him at their old house. The Humane Society contacted me because the chip was registered to our vet.Well, maybe they lost your contact information? NOPE OUR OLD TAG WITH OUR NAME, NUMBER, AND ADDRESS ARE STILL ON HIS COLLAR!Maybe they were coming back for him? NOPE THE HUMANE SOCIETY WAS CONTACTED BY THE WOMAN'S MOTHER, WHO NOTICED THE DOG THERE WHEN SHE WENT TO GO CLEAN THE HOUSE FOR THE REALTOR! SHE SAID THEY DIDN'T WANT HIM!So tomorrow I am working through lunch so I can leave work early so I can drive an hour to pick up .... what I guess is my dog again... for now.If they were so neglectful to leave him, I know his training has gone to crap over the last 5 months. I don't know what condition he is in physically, or emotionally. I am praying for the best, but I am expecting the worst, because of my past experience.Maybe some of you dog people can relate to what I am feeling, since our dogs are like part of the family. Giant Ninja Robot
Stuie that really sucks I'm sorry man.People who neglect and abuse animals are some of the lowest out there imo.We have a cat who was neglected in Detroit and he's taken a good 3 years to acclimate back to a level of trust and good nature. I really am sorry and if it makes you feel any better at all, I'm pretty damn pissed of as well. I can't believe they would bullshit about their intentions to you. WHY EVEN BOTHER?!?! What's to gain? Some people confound me.Good luck with him.
SimplexCoda
That does suck, i have a black lab that i have to keep at my mothers due to not having a yard at my house and hes a digger so not suited to a rental house. I hope hes ok.Also what is it with people naming dogs Dakota or Coda. Dakota is my real name and coda is my nickname.
Stuie
Coda is a musical term. Most of the time we name stuff it's musical in nature. Are daughter is going to be named Cadence.

SuburbanSmoker
i had a pound puppy way back in the day that was absolutly terrified of people, whenever i would pull out a gun if i was going shooting she would freak out like i was out to get her. absolutly broke my heart, then i started to think about the situation she was in now and i felt alotbetter because i no that my family, and the aspca directors family will give her a much better home. find comfort in knowing your dog will be in a much better situation. im sorry to hear this. ColibriDon
That's such BS. While I was reading that, I was thinking something had happened to the dog like it got hurt or something. At least that didn't happen and you'll be able to take care of him again. He should remember you and then you can get back to retraining him. I do know how you feel, I have 5 dogs, each and every one of them a member of the family. I rarely get to see them because I don't live at my Mom's farm anymore but I am getting ready to buy another one in the coming months. So excited. Looking forward to have a new member of the family. Sorry to hear that the owners were shit but at least he'll be in your hands again and safe. Good luck with the allergy problem though.
Victim026
Wow that's absolutely horrible, I just can't fathom ever leaving an animal behind. I've actually got a rescue myself who went through just that, she's a half yorkie/half poodle named Muppet. Her owners left her in her crate inside the house after they moved out and the landlord didn't find her til a week after they had left. She had been through hell and back with the following medical conditions: Mange, X-ray that showed several healed broken ribs from past abuse, all but 4 teeth missing, a tail that had been broken in 3 places, not to mention all the psychological damage she suffered. She still 6 years later stays under the bed the majority of the day and actually only came out from under the bed to eat for the first 6 months we had her. She's a wonderful dog who unfortunately is getting old now and is going blind/deaf so I think the day is approaching where I'm going to need to do what's best for her. It'll be a sad day in my book.....
Sylren
That's just awful, I am so sorry that happened to Coda. It really makes me sick that so many people treat animals like they don't matter and don't have feelings. I can't imagine how angry you must be because I am steaming mad right now just from reading this. I hope that Coda finds a good home with people who really love him. It must be so hard to not be able to keep him permanently yourself. I am gonna be sending out loads of good energy your way. Good luck xoxoxo
Rani
I have a cat that I got from the shelter. Kabuki is my favorite cat of all time. But he was skin and bones when I got him and he still has what I call "starving kitty syndrome". The dishes are full and treats are given every day, but in the two years I've had him he's never given up that deprived attitude. Animals carry their experiences with them just as we do. You absolutely should report the former owner for cruelty. It's illegal to leave your dog like that. I have zero tolerance for harming the helpless. Even if it's a ticket (which is all it is in some areas), still she'll have to pay the fine and hopefully won't do anything like that ever again.'Rani
indian_villager
That is such horrible treatment.....Why is it that on both forums that I am on have sad news regarding dogs....On the car forum I am part one of the members' dog died in a brutal car accident....the assailant tired to run.Stuie man I hope all goes well. If you need someone harpooned you let me know.

Matt-641
Sorry to hear that..I don't understand how people can just leave their pet when they move.We took in a cat that was abandoned by some people we rented a house out to a while ago. The least they can do is try to find another good home for their pet.Hope it will still work out for you and hope he isn't hurt in any way when you go and pick him up. Stuie
Okay We got him. He's in pretty good shape, probably a bit underweight 5-7 pounds.Aparently the woman that had him has done this before, Animal Control was at the shelter. When I asked why she wasn't charged for abandoning. The Animal Control Officer said, "we really don't do that here." Glad I don't live there and feel sorry for all the pets in the tiny little town.We have cleaned him and he still stinks. Going to do it again in a few hours. My wife is already showing signs of an allergic reaction to him. So now begins the process of finding him a new home. tinyj316
That's really too bad... my dog, Remus, is a pound puppy. I picked him up from a kill shelter and he was really under weight. He's staying with my parents right now, but I know they treat him well (they treat him better than my brother who is spoiled rotten). If I had the lady's number, I'd make sure to send her nightly wake up calls and signing her up for every telemarketer list I could find. People like that deserve to have their thumbs chopped off

Rani
For every bad story there's a good one......I put myself through junior college working for Riverside County Heath Department in the Office of Animal Control. I saw some pretty aweful things done to animals, but there was this one church that had just been finished. Nearly close to a million dollars on this building, and during services they kept hearing a cat calling. Happened for a few weeks and they never could find the cat. They called in Animal Control and the officer determined that the cat had been trapped inside the walls when they'd done the drywall. Million dollar building and they didn't hesitate a moment. The entire congregation came in and started tearing out walls. The cat was alive and nothing but a fur wrapped skeleton, but he was a sweetheart. He'd survived most likely by licking the condensation off the pipes in the skid walls. We made sure he got water, food and vet care and although we were a kill shelter, that cat somehow never made it to euthanisia. We moved that cat from pen to pen to pen and destroyed the paperwork every tme they "found" him. I remember my supervisor being confronted with that cat having been there 6 weeks. She didn't blink an eye as she insisted, "Nope, new cat - gotta keep it at least five days." Then we'd move him again. People from the church finally found him a good home. We heard they named him Sunday. So for every rotten person that mistreats animals there are some that love them and will go the extra mile for them. Stuie, kinda shows you and your wife are a couple of those that will.'Rani
Stuie
It's been a while but to my greatest prayer we found him a home. Great family that love him. I held off on saying anything cause we have been checking with them every week to see if there is any problems giving them full oppurtunity to give him back so I don't have to go through this again. He's happy, his new family is happy and we are happy.

My Pets are my fam. I have no kids, and probly never will. I would rather have dogs.I just dont understand how a human can treat an animal like that. cynnamongirl
I too just read the whole thread. That's horrible! We just adopted a dog who was rescued by our no-kill shelter from a shelter a few hours away that was prepping to euthanize ALL their animals instead of moving them to their newly built facility. Sickening. Our Willard is the most amazing dog - I couldn't have spent $1000 and got a better dog. He is good with our kids, our cats, our friends, etc. Kudos that you were able to find Coda a good home again. What a tragedy that in our throw-away society we count living, breathing beings as discardable.~cynn
