evilded777 Posted March 27, 2009 Share Posted March 27, 2009 I think I'm gonna second that opinion on the "phake" phunnels.I realize now that I have two imitations, not one real and one imitation.Some times they smoke ok, others not so great... and it seems to depend on the coals and heat management in general. If I use good coals that burn pretty hot, spaced out well... pretty good smoke. Mediocre coals, mediocre heat management... kinda craptacular.Ordering two real phunnels today. I am wondering if maybe they sent a chinese instead though...I have to use a LOT of coals. I usually start out with 3 CH instant coals and once they get small, I light a 4th and put it on until it gets harsh then take it off, then back on and so forth. Seems like a lot of coals to me, but then again I have heard that CH coals just don't give off very much heat to begin with anyway, I know from experience they ash like a bitch! How do you tell if the bowl is a real tangiers or not??Edit: forgot to mention that the bowl does get quite hot to the touch during the session, but I was figuring this was normal as I haven't seen a bowl NOT do this, don't know. Sturdier, smaller, and just feels better all around. The guy that said that was wrong. The clay Tangiers phunnels are made with is denser and conducts heat better (since there are less air gaps in it). Its not fishy at all. I did a lot of experimentation and research on materials when I was designing the Tangiers bowls.Besides, I thought you were some sort of conservative. I would have thought you would jump at the chance to buy something made in the USA, made by Americans from US-made and manufactured materials. Everything in the phunnels is made in the USA. The Chinese ones have a plaster-like and smooth texture.Also, Tangiers Phunnels are handmade and are slightly more irregular. The Chinese phunnels have consistent grooves in the sides to make it look handmade, but its just made of injected, molded clay. The Chinese grooves are quite close together, the Tangiers grooves (if present) are further apart, about the width of someone's fingers in distance apart...which is not a coincidence.
