Smoking At Work

Recommended Posts

SO let me say I do not punch a time clock at work, so a 30 minute smoke break is not out of the question.

THere have been many times I've been at work and thought "damn I wish I could smoke now".. seriously why cant I. the people in my office who smoke cigs congregate outside and smoke. Why couldn't I smoke something like a leila outside with them?

I have 2 main concerns:

The first is image. We are a Real Estate office (the one with the red white and blue balloon) so public image is very important. The place where the people smoke is right outside the office so everyone walking in the office sees you. I'm affraid with the misconceptions of hookah smoking I will be repremanded by my boss.

The second is time. It only takes 5 minutes to smoke a cig, but between setting up, packing bowl ,lighting coal, it would take at least 30-45 to get a decent smoke in. I dont punch a clock so it doesnt matter really but it is quite a while. On the other hand some of the cig smokers take 10 cig breaks or more in the course of a day..

What do you guys think?

As for the misconception, that can definitely create a problem, the best thing you can do is just inform people who assume something else.

As for the second issue, just have the bowl pre packed and foiled before work, a few min before you take break, throw some coals on, then when you go on break everything will be ready, just assemble the hookah and your on your way.

I've debated doing this as well on Saturdays, when work is pretty much slow, and it probably wouldn't matter if I disappeared for my hour lunch to go smoke some hookah..

I think my biggest concerns is having to light coals. I pretty much started out with naturals, so having to go to quick-lites would probably ruin my experience!!! LOL

not really something I'd ever consider doing - cool as it may be. Too many barriers to success IMHO, and, at least in Texas, on-the-clock cigarette/coffee breaks are permissible because of their short duration, but clocking out to smoke hookah seems counterproductive.

The only way I could see it work would be a 10-15 minute break with a quicklight and a preloaded ~5g bowl on a prefilled handheld pipe.

I've thought about it many times while at work, but it's just not in any way convenient. It takes too much time to set up. Even with QL's and a prepacked bowl and base already filled with water, it will still take some time to smoke it. I agree with newjack, it's best for when you have some time to kill at home and can just relax.

Plus, a handheld hookah would look alot like another type of pipe you wouldn't want to be associated with.

At a job i used to have the smokers would go in the back where there was just a wooded area and no one could see and smoke so every once in awhile i would bring in my hookah set it up and while we were dead all of the workers would rotate breaks and smoke it. it worked pretty well and was real nice to be able to relax for 15 mins during my shift.

I work at a local "high class" restaurant/bar. I have taken my 32" KM ice hookah to work before and smoked it. It was nice, but no one else smoked it with me so it was kinda boring. I don't actually smoke it during work as I am constantly moving around. Instead, I just got to work like 30 min early and smoked before work in the upstairs office area. None of my bosses cared in the least bit. One of the owners actually asked me to go get it one night after work so we could all smoke, lol. I declined tho because a couple of the guys wanted to use it for NHT and thats not cool with me.

I'd bring in my qt with a prepacked bowl and smoke it in my car, but we only break 1 person at a time... so it would be pretty boring. I have done it in the parking lot with other people after my shift ended though, and we got some looks but no big deal, after all it IS perfectly legal.

Completely impossible I'm afraid. sad.gif

Misconceptions, time restraints, non-stop barrage of questions, funny looks, "hey can i get in on that (and not share the hose)" , young kid comes up - "hey is that "you know what"??? Lemme in on that!!" (it has happened to me in front of my home) .

There's too many problems.

Maybe you can get one of those little tiny brass ones? With the conical little wind-hats? - That picture of that kid who killed himself in Rolling Stone kinda ruined that though..

I would say misconceptions will be the biggest hindrance, followed by time.

For the past year, I've worked from home, and frequently, as is a benefit of a home office, I smoke a bowl, or two during my work hours.

But, I've got a new job, in a proper office, so...once that starts, I know I'll fiend for it.

I can't wait to be a professor. I'll sit at the steps of my office building with my hookah and a good book and a stack of [probably] poorly written essays :-D

Hookah is for relaxation, cigarettes are more or less for a quick nicotine jolt....at least that's my take on it.

How many pipe smokers or cigar smokers (real cigars, not black&milds) do you see taking those breaks? Exactly. smile.gif

Work blows, why not try to relax a bit while at work, thats what breaks are for.

*a group of guys smoking hookah at work*

"Dude.. this is awesome.."
"Hell yeah."
"I think our break was over like.. 2 hours ago."
"Yeah, we should work or something."
"Mmm.. fuck it."
"Yeah.. pass the hose."

I work at a lab and i keep my hookah in the tiny smoking room that we have on our floor. I smoke my hookah while reading papers, it's not bad at all. In fact, i get more reading done sometimes while smoking hookah than sitting in a cubicle trying to read while your computer distracts you. I've also befriended a bunch of cig smokers on our floor, and now we sometimes share a pipe. It's great.

At this point, I'd rather not. I'm just sick and tired of explaining to people what a hookah is, let alone trying to convey how it would be acceptable at the workplace. I'll save it for home or a friends house where I can enjoy.

I've thought about it before. I could pull it off without a hitch where I work because I am forced to take 30+ minute lunches off the clock every time I work a full shift. That can go up to an hour (30 minutes unpaid) if take my breaks at the same time. However, I'd need to get a gas burner of some sort and it'd probably be kind of a pain in the ass. I'd rather save it for my time off when I have enough time to sit back and relax without worrying about how much longer I have before I have to get back to work. Edited by Ralleac
