Replacement Tang Phunnel Is Here!

Recommended Posts

Woot! My replacement phunnel has arrived! And on Saturday, just as I predicted it would.

Big thanks to John and his wife over at HookahJohn.com for getting it to me so quickly!

He also sent me a sample of El Hennawy Two Apples to review. But I'm not much of a reviewer. sad.gif I'll try it, though. wink.gif

Well that was an incredible session.. I didn't want it to end, but I'm going out to dinner tonight, so I hadta get ready.

There's something different about this bowl than from my last one. My last one was shallow, this one is slightly deeper. It let me pack more shisha in there, and the smoke and flavor were so good. Perhaps Tangiers should make deeper bowls? I dunno. I packed the shit outta it. I must have put 20-30g of Tang Cherry in there, and it was so smexy tasting. I started with 3 jap canarys and a windcover, and got epic clouds and flavor, then went to 3 halves of coco naras, wind cover, and it too was epic clouds and flavor. No harshness whatsoever. Just beautiful. smile.gif

My other bowl was burnt pretty badly, too. Black stuff all over inside the bowl from me burning it too many times when I first started out. This one's still clean. Maybe that makes a difference too?

Yeah I know. Over the last several months of ordering from him I've received 3 packs of playing cards, and 3 knife and lighter sets. I still haven't found fuel for the lighters.

you cant find a can of butane anywhere near you?
you could even check hardware stores like home depot. i know the home depots here in canada sell butane for the butane soldering irons. two common brands of butane would be ronson or clipper.

I just had a quick question. I've seen so many videos of people packing tangiers in a phunnel bowl and they all say to really pack it, but whenever I do that, I find that it gets pretty harsh. Have you guys ever had problem with it touching the foil and burning? I usually use 3-4 coco nara coals.

Shit, man.. there's your problem right there.. I use 2-3 halves of coco naras, and do off and on with a windcover just until it gets goin. 3-4 cocos would burn the crap outta anything you put in a phunnel.

He must be using a large phunnel or something. For small, use 2-3 halves, for a medium, use 2-3 cocos, for a large, use 3-4.. or something like that. wink.gif

Oh, and if he's got them hanging off the edge, then he's really only using half the coal. tongue.gif Edited by JDHarding

Thanks for the quick replies. Yeah, I'm not sure what the size of the phunnel is, I just ordered it from hookah-shisha, but I find that I use 4 with any other shisha and I have no problem. Is tangiers really that difficult to get right?

If you got it from hookah-shisha you dont have an original. you have a copy.

the copies have been proven to not perform as well, they dont transfer heat like originals do.

there are plenty of threads on here on how to smoke tangiers.

take a look at the Tangiers section of the Wiki for how-to's.

Tangiers is heat finicky, mainly. Just add a coal, smoke, add a coal, smoke, and keep doing that until it's harsh, then take a coal off and smoke for a while. That's how I used to do it. Now I just sorta know how much I need.

Where can i get the real thing?

And does Tangiers usually require more heat then other shishas?

Small Tangiers Phunnel

hard to explain but...

i think it requires more heat but less of it.

i know that doesnt make any sense.

umm... if one coal burns hotter than another then that coal would be preferred i believe.

ugh... it's really hard to explain. I hope Eric chimes in on that part.

Your Chinese/Havana you got from H-S should be fine for now.

Take a look at my Noob Technique and try using 2 coconaras opposite each other. I must stress that you need to put a lot in there! Make sure you poke plenty of holes. When you put the coals on it should sizzle, that's normal. Smoke it for a bit before you say it doesnt work, although you should get good smoke and flavor on the first hit.
Try that and let me know what happens.

I think it's.. the coals should burn super hot, but have less contact area with the shisha. This is why half-sized cocos work best most of the time. Or the jap canarys. The canarys burn hot, but are relatively small, so they don't burn all over the bowl.

Um the japanese canarys don't burn hot... they are actually burn at a noticeably lower temperature then other coals.

Oh I forgot to mention to put a windcover over the japs so they do burn hot. They burn hotter under a windcover.

Thanks for answering all the questions, I have a lot of 'em. Hmm, so are windcovers that necessary or at least very useful to have? And with Tangiers, is it usually a lot stronger flavor-wise compared to other shishas?

Tangiers has a more potent flavor than every shisha I've smoked - Havana, AF, Nak, Fusion, Fasntasia and Hookah-Hookah.

Wind covers are pretty useful...... especially for the price. I find that sometimes i don't have quite enough heat on my bowl (starting it or after the coals have gotten pretty small) just throw the wind cover up on there and you'll get some extra heat. I like to think my wind cover is like an extra half coal. i use it when i know using an entire extra coal would be too much heat. I wouldn't say that i use my wind cover for every bowl but the vast majority of them see the wind cover at some point. just depends how long i'm smoking.

so to actually answer the question. You shouldn't rush out and buy one like right this instant because it isn't a NECESSITY however if you place an order online or see one in your local shop it is defiantly worth picking up.

Oh and the second part of your question. If you think other shishas have lots of flavors tangiers will pimp slap you with flavor (and buzz, haha). Best flavor i've ever experienced from a bowl has come from tangiers.
