Couple Newbie Questions

Hey guys, new to this site and hookah in general. I just got one last night from an arab/Indian bakery/store thing for $50. I've used it twice and it worked pretty good both times I guess. Still have a couple questions. 

1. What is/how do I use that valve on the opposite side of the hose?

2. How can I tell what type of hookah mine is? I'll try to get a picture up once I charge my camera battery but it says "havana hookah" or something on the ash tray.

The valve is the purge valve. It allows you to clear the smoke in the vase. You just blow on your hose and the air pressure will force the smoke out of the jar through the valve and out into the environment. Just don't blow to hard because it can cause the water to go up the stem and into your bowl.

the best way for us you help you with identifying it would be to post pics. without pics, your description would be "it is shiny, has a glass vase and a bowl on top. what brand is it?" lol. we have a lot of very knowledgable people here so im sure at least one of us will be able to identify it with a photo.

Yeah, the picture would clear up things. Anyway, Havana is a tobacco brand, as far as I'm aware. Never seen Havana brand hookahs, but it's quite possible that they also started selling hookahs.

if it's the same company, then hopefully the quality of their tobacco isn't representative of the quality of their hookahs. :\

Since your first question's been sufficiently answered I'll answer #2.

I got a havana hookah as a gift a while back, and it's a decent chinese made pipe. They smoke alright, but not great, and to their credit the one I have at least does fit together well. The hoses are very meh though, and the hookahs overall are a bit light weight.

Basically it's a decent first hookah and a way to get into it, but you'll be upgrading eventually (or rather, collecting more like the rest of us) hehe.

i went from a crappy pipe with crappy stuff. (i was smoking nakhla though) to a crappy pipe with a nammor (i still have it and it works fine. that was about 2 years ago) to a crappy pipe with a nammor and a phunnel and tangiers! then i got a mya, had that for a long time. now i have my KM.

i'm sure much more will come in the future.. we will see...

my first pipe was a 26" egyptian with sand in the center, i thought that was kinda odd, you could hear it rolling around in there, made it nice and heavy though!

the first hookah I bought was a Magdy, but my first is of unknown origin, not a bad hookah though. still have the stem for when friends borrow it.

Well this is the most welcoming and patient forums I've ever seen. Haha. Appriciate it guys. I'm working on a picture, my digital camera is having battery issues and I just dropped my iphone on the cement in my garage and fucked up the screen . Well I'm about to upload a pic so it should just be a second after this post. Doesn't really matter just something for me to know. I didn't want to spend too much and now that my mom is opening up to the idea she might let me order a nice one online.

P.S.- I'm going to Egypt this summer, probably mail myself one or two from there if they are any good

nice...let us know how it goes. i asked my fiancee if we could go to egypt on a vacation next year...she agreed, so i'm going to get at least $200-$300 worth of hookahs while i'm there. maybe more depending on the US Duty limit...which I think may be $800.

Would be doubtful, the size is smaller than mya's, so a mya adapter won't really work. If you really did want to, you could make your own... even if you're no machinist you could figure something out with a bit of planning and a trip to the hardware store.

Havana's smoke fairly well and if u get ur set up down right u can make it rival some of the top brands. And when you go to egypt ask around to where you can find Khalil Mamoon as they are the best in Egypt and are very favored among the forums. I have smoked out of them and they are very very good.

Damn, alright. I could probably unscrew the current adapter for the hose and take it to lowes and see what they say to do.

Yeah right when I walked up to the store and saw it in the window I knew I wanted it. Just walked in there with my fingers crossed that it was not shitty and not too expensive. Turned out to be wellpriced for a first hookah.




Just had a 2 hour smoke session with a couple friends in the garage. Smoked some Starbuzz strawberry dacquri and al fahquer(spelled wrong probably) apple. It was good. Think it would be fine to smoke in my room if I put a wet towel under the door, had the window open and layed down a wooden board probably 2' x 2' with some thin metal plating on it? My mom might go for that, even though my cousin was smoking one above the garage in this room they have and they tipped over the coal and it burned through the floor and landed on the hood of their bmw haha.

he would have to leave the coal burning on the floor for quite some time before it would burn right through....

Chinamon that is exactly what I am thinking....I am thinking by some odd reason it could have been smoking in an attic, the coal fell went burned right through the insulation through the sheet rock and on to the car....but come to think of it the insulation prob. would have ignited and it would be a while for a coal to go through sheet rock. If you could somehow elaborate jayeee that would be awesome as now I am very very intrigued in this story if you have not noticed by this long semi-worthless post.

Yeah of course. They built the garage(its an additional garage not attached to the house) from the ground up and it was done very quickly and probably not the best. When you walk on it you can tell its not the sturdiest floor haha. But they were all kinda drunk and reached to pick up the hookah first and make sure it was all good before they even thought to look at the coal. That didn't end well for them. I don't think there was any sheetrock or metal, but I could be mistaken. It was built to be just a storage space above the new garage and they added a tv and made it a hangout spot

Thanks man. Like I said this is by far the most welcoming community. Once some court stuff thats hanging over my head is over I'm probably goign to make an online order of a few things. I'm kinda doubting that some of the aftermarket stuff will fit on my hookah, but most stuff is so cheap its worth a try

And yes, I felt the same way about the forum when I first joined. These guys are great at giving advice and don't seem to ever mind answering the same question a billion times. Can't count how many "what hookah should I order?" and "What KM should I order?" and "which of these three hookahs is the best" and other threads of those type get posted all the time. Hell, I posted one myself when I first started. One thing that helps tho, is that one of the forum rules is no bashing other members and such (paraphrased a bit)... Oh, and if you haven't be sure to check out codename067's youtube vids, that is what made me go with a KM ice.

true that, i got my zakiy in a little while ago and it is the best pipe i have, hands down.
