Meatball
Hey everyone, I did a search hoping to find something on getting the best taste out of tangiers tobacco and phunnel bowls, but didnt find anything. If I missed something in the search, my bad Anyways, Ive been smoking hookah for a while and have had a large phunnel bowl for some time now, but I really cant figure out how to get the "best" taste out of it. Right now, Im smoking tangiers orange soda in my large phunnel bowl and am really not getting that great of a taste out of it. It really doesnt even taste like orange soda, which makes me sad. The chocolate mint usually tastes really good, but I cant seem to get sweeter flavors to get the same punch. Now, heres my setup. Im using a medium sized hookah (bought it from a friend, its really well taken care of, and I can usually get flavors to taste great in a regular bowl) with warm water in the base, 1 large quicklight coal, packed down orange soda tangiers, and aluminum foil shiny side up with small holes all over it, and a large phunnel bowl. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the best TASTE out of this? Im not 100% concerned about smoke volume or thickness, cause Id rather have amazing taste in it.Thanks in advance
Click
With the tangiers you are smoking you want to use larger holes. At least full toothpick sized. Not sure how much it will help but try shiny side down. May or may not do anything, but worth a shot. With the large phunnel you probably have to use more that 1 quicklite. Try using like 4 halves to start and add/remove from there.
Sylren
Well, I put my foil shiny side down, but I'm fairly sure that doesn't really matter All I can think of is maybe it's not acclimated enough??? Does it smell good?
Arcane
fully acclimate tangierspack it tightlots of airflow from the top. some people use skewers to poke their holes so that they're bigger, but i just use toothpick sized holes and put more of them.adds coals till just BEFORE it gets harsh.that's all the tips i got. ExSmoker
QUOTE (Sylren @ Mar 31 2009, 02:02 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Well, I put my foil shiny side down, but I'm fairly sure that doesn't really matter The shinier side of the foil will reflect heat (think of it as the 'dark side' of a one-way mirror) better than the dull. If you have the coals on the dull it will absorb heat from the coals better and reflect heat already in the phunnel bowl better.... at least that's the common myth According to wikipedia, the reflective/dull property is just a side effect of the manufacturing processes, and will have no perceptible effect. SuburbanSmoker
1. make sure the tobacco smells like it is sposed to. orange soda is one of my favorite tangiers flavors and i find it hard to believe that it doesnt taste much like orange soda.2. go to the tangiers wiki read everything.3. come back and tell us everything on the wiki fixed your problem. evilded777
No one else asked, so I have to: is it an authentic Phunnel? If its not, you're gonna need more heat than an authentic one. If the lip around the edge of the bowl is not flat, its not authentic (at least I think that's really the only way to tell)
Meatball
Its a tangiers phunnel bowl, so yes, its authentic. I appreciate all the help fellas, thanks for telling me about the wiki too, gonna try all this and see what happens. I wish I had a stove or something of the like so I could use natural coals, but thats beyond the point. Ill let everyone know if it worked.edit: Quick question. Ive had this shisha since January. Does shisha have a lifespan? Also, acclimation, I didnt let it do it like the wiki says, but it does smell like it should when I open up the container. Do you think its already acclimated? Click
If it smells like it then you should be fine.

Click
The difference can be seen in the material used to make the phunnel and the shape of the phunnel spout.http://www.hookahforum.com/?showtopic=24948

ih303
One question I have for you is what is your location? The reason I ask is because I've been told acclimation has a lot to do with where you live and the climate conditions there. For example, I live in South Dakota and under normal conditions, it takes several weeks to fully acclimate. The climate has been fluctuating a lot recently so my new Tangy is not acclimating at all. I've decided to just shelve it until the weather calms down and try again.Tangy is a tricky product. So many variables are involved that are not present in most other shisha brands. Meatball
I live in near DC, but the shisha smells beyond amazing. I let it acclimate for 24 hours and its smelling even better now. If anything, it makes my dorm smell like oranges. Im about to try out the ideas everyone gave me, cause I didnt get to last night, we'll see how it goes

Just smoked it last night, and had to send out mass text messages on how shitty everyone elses night was comparatively to my own orgasmic experience...Anyway.Medium Phunnel: 6-8 ice cubes (I like chilled water)Mya, single hoser w/ purgerI use the XL Method: I smash the medium phunnel into the shisha, compress the crap out of it.The Tangiers will THEN fluff itself back up slightly, scrape the middle out, and most of the top crap back into the tupperwear until you have...1/2 - 1cm left of shisha OVER the bowls rim.Foil, with shiny side DOWN.Holes ALL the way to the bottom around the ENTIRE bowl (even the middle). You'll notice how compressed the shisha is with how chunky it feels to poke holes all the way down (I use a toothpick, or a poker that came with my tongs, which is ~size of a toothpick).Coals:I like the SLAM tangiers with heat, I know its not the consensus with tangiers, but its the ONLY way I've had good bowls.1) You don't want quick lite anything for tangiers...thats like...gross2) coco's, use 5 to start2b) Exotica's (my preference, cause coco's burn VERY hot), a entire stick less 1/2" fully lit and placed on the bowl. You'r first few hits will be the sHIT.After 5-10 min though, its too much heat, remove 1/3 of all the heat. Now you just OCD heat manage the bowl: if it loses smoke, add a coal. If it starts tickling too much / flavor gets off, remove a section of coal.Repeat for three hours, and have fun.
