When, How, Did You Start Smoking Hookah?

I've been fascinated by hookahs since I saw the catapillar with one in Alice in Wonderland. They just seemed so attractive to me. I'm an artist in my "real life" and very bohemian in personality. Someone here on the forum called me a "typical hippie do-gooder". And the personality description really sort of fits me. Guess my "type" have always been drawn to things like hookahs. The first pipe I smoked was the first one I bought. I was cruising the internet, found an online store and ordered a 19" Sahara. I read the directions twice on setting it up, and then just dug in. I loved it so much when the coal died, I packed the whole thing up and headed over to one of my girlfriend's house to show it off. We set it up and smoked it and within an hour she was online ordering her own. Since then I've collected a dozen pipes and haven't lost any of the fascination. That very first Sahara I passed on to a co-worker who was hooked the very first night. Said she fell asleep with the hose in her mouth and the whole family was out buying tobacco and coals the next day. People say it's a fad for the young, but I think it's more a fulfillment of the part of us that longs to dump the stress of civilization and get back to relaxation and socializing.

I do believe that was a generalized statement I made in the gun-control thread. But if you feel it fits you, by all means...

LOL..... I wasn't calling you out..... It does fit. I'm very 60's-ish easy going generally, and firmly believe in that line from "The Kingdom" in which Orlando Bloom has inscribed in the beam of his forge:

"What man is he who does not try to make the world a better place?"

I started about 3 years ago when I was in Raleigh, NC staying with some friends doing an internship over the summer. Needless to say that summer was filled with a lot of things. But one night my indian friends (who made me an honorary indian) wanted to smoke hookah and asked me to join them. I've never smoked anything in my life, not even a puff on a cigg, so I was wary. But they explained that the tobacco didn't actually burn and what the point was. So I tried it...I swear the smoke was pink/red from the strawberry nakalha shisha. And it was amazing, I haven't stopped since. I bought my first hookah as soon as I moved away which turned out to be a mya, then I bought a bigger hookah which I found out nearly a year or so later that it was a KM, so I ended up lucking out on my first hookahs, and as a result I've never had a bad hookah.

After finding this place I've just expanded on my knowledge and work as a missionary of hookah.

I was on a job assignment in early 2006 in Virginia for 1-1/2 months coming home every other weekend. There were serveral people I was working with there that were from different parts of the middle east. One looked just like Fez from "That 70's Show" and I had a lot of fun with that smile.gif
The coworker I went there with and I were out every night getting drunk for the most part and every few days or so the locals would go with us. This one night they all came to Chantilly where we were staying and we all went to a middle eastern restaurant one Friday night.
We go into this place and there are hookahs all over the place and I'm thinking "damn, we're all going to end up in jail tonight" sad.gif I'm not asking questions at that point and I see the belly dancer and think that's pretty damn cool smile.gif
It soon occurs to me that what they are smoking must be legal and the guys start explaining as they are ordering up food and beer.
By the time we are done eating and I'm throwing down the beer I'm kinda game for anything. So I take a hit off a hookah for the first time and I was like "WTF is this?!?!?!?!" It was incredible!!! I was hooked!!!
Some of my coworkers back here in Texas told me that they have hookahs they brought back from Dubai, Jordan, etc. So I get a hankering to get my own hookah. The rest is pretty much history wink.gif
But I have never been to a lounge yet that came close to that place. The food, atmospere, hookahs, etc. were the best I have still seen to date.

a friend of mine, Kenan - you on here?? - graduated from virginia tech and opened a hookah bar called SheSha with a buddy, Paul - you on here?? - in blacksburg. one session and it quickly became my favorite place downtown. we smoked lemmon, and lemmon is still my staple of staples. missing SheSha and a bad experience at a local place in northern va led me to buy my own hookah back in october, and i've been lovin it since! ...thanks to the good people on this forum! you've taught me a lot so far!
