ilikemyusername
QUOTE (Dr. B @ Apr 5 2009, 12:23 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Eh, DOOM has always had trouble keeping time right. Maybe it's just that he's monotonous, but he doesn't hit the beat with his words consistently.i think thats what makes him great, that and his voice is like chocolate velvet.its a more raw sound, i don't see so many people on this forum with anticipation for t-paynes next album coming out. Dr. B
There's a difference between unpolished and unskilled. True he isn't auto-tuned (thankfully), but he didn't ever take time to work on his timing or breath control. He's been the same since KMD and the 5%er days except that his voice got deeper. I think Doom is alright; but aside from his writing style - not actual lyrics because they're mostly nonsense - and beat samples he doesn't bring much to the table.Jack of all trades, master of none. That being said I'm not a hater. I'm just a critic. Edited April 7, 2009 by Dr. B
Giant Ninja Robot
I disagree. It takes just as much skill to ride the edge of a beat successfully as it does to fall into it completely. Doom is a master of undulating verses, keeping them just on beat enough to leave you comfortable and in the groove, while keeping it outside the beat JUST enough to intrigue and rip uniquely. And his beats are sick.As far as the writing style - lyrics - I don't think you can rightfully say they're not on point because of some abstraction, as an emcee I tend to stray into the abstract as well from time to time and sometimes leaving lyrical interpretation up to listeners and keeping things in the original stream of thought and context is just as important as communicating to the listener in a way they can relate to and uinderstand without major effort. Aesop Rock (although I don't LOVE his music because imo his beats DO mostly suck when he does them himself) is another good example.Abstract art is still art.just one amateur musicians opinion
Balthazar
QUOTE (giant ninja robot @ Apr 8 2009, 05:12 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Aesop Rock (although I don't LOVE his music because imo his beats DO mostly suck when he does them himself) is another good example.Give his older albums a chance. Music for Earthworms (Antisocial), Float (How to be a carpenter), Appleseed (Dryspell) and Labor Days (Daylight) are all sick, and a lot of the beats are his own. But I guess his collaborations with Blockhead works best. Not a huge fan of Bazooka Tooth or Fast cars ... but his last album was alright. He's released some good tracks after that too, like Tomorrow Morning. Edited April 8, 2009 by Balthazar
Giant Ninja Robot
I've heard that before and I'll admit to only owning Bazooka Tooth, on which I think the beats are too dense and tinny, it just muddles his complex rhymes instead of being a foundation for them.Out of all the older albums what one would you reccomend the most? Balthazar
Labor Days (Float at a close second place). And I agree on Bazooka Tooth.
Dr. B
It's not the abstract lyrics I have a problem with; it's the space-filler nonsense that comes up a lot.I'll throw it up for Tick Tick... in how he can find timing, but when he isn't fucking around he still slips too much.I still enjoy listening to him, I'm just sayin. You emcee? throw some lyrics down in chat next time, I'll spit somethin so you aren't alone
