Tangiers And John's Coals

Recommended Posts

Been using 2-3 Jap canarys, or 2-3 halves of coco naras for Tangiers, but right now I'm trying 2 of John's quicklights and they seem to be a perfect amount of heat for Tang. Great flavor and everything.

Too bad these quicklights stink sooooo badly while lighting. Whew they're nasty. Smells like I just got the BBQ going indoors.

Anybody else try these with Tang?

I notice the big clouds I get sorta hang there for a while with John's coals. Cocos and Canarys don't quite hang as long. Or my eyes are playing tricks on me.

I got 3 QLs on there with the windcover on them. Heh.. no harshness.. big clouds.

I start with three not face down slightly off the edge to heat the bowl up, then take one off and put the other 2 face down when it is hot enough. once the two die down, i throw the other one on to keep it toasty under a windcover. I then start to heat up more coals and keep 2 on face down for the duration of the session.

John's QL FTW.

So how long, in general, to people wait before putting these coals on the bowl?

I ask because I have sometimes gotten a NASTY nitrate taste to my whole bowl, and I'm wondering if I am just not waiting long enough.

I mean they are not igniting, for sure... the "flame on" part is long over, and usually got at least a slight coating of ash on them.

i throw them on the bowl immediately after they finish sparking and smoking.
and then i take a puff right away because i am an impatient bastard.

When you put the coconaras on, do you put them on with the larger side of it down? or do you have them sit straight up where it's taller then wide?

I think I'm not saying this correctly. Do you have 'em like this || or like this ==?

i use john's QL coals too with tangiers cause even though they are QL's they are like natural coconut wood coals. I start with two and its perfect heat for my small phunnel

hmmmm.....

this is making me wonder what caused that awful taste. I used 3 of John's coals last night on a HS phunnel, and they worked out pretty good. No bad taste at all, and I didn't even wait all that long.

More research is required!
