Old_Skwl
I have only just bought my first hookah in the past few days, and the only thing that really concerns me is all the carbon monoxide in hookah smoke so I had a thought and I wanted to share it with you all and see what you think (if someone else thought of this or this is in the wrong place I am sorry.Anyway here is my idea:the majority of carbon monoxide come from the coal what if instead of placing the coal on top of the foil on top of the bowl one were to make a cup out of foil (with no holes) and place the lit charcoal in that and then place that on the hookah. The way i see it the heat from the charcoal will heat the foil but when you hit it the hookah no air will pass over the charcoal which means no carbon monoxide =). Only possible problems i can see are:1. Not enough heat will be produced when air does not pass over the charcoal2. Ash build up in the foil cup3. I am an idiot and this will obviously not work (i hope not)anyway i plan on trying this in the near future so i will report back, but for now let me know what you guys think.i will upload a diagram of this idea incase you can not picture it (sorry it is in paint)
OneGreenMonstah
i feel like the foil without holes sitting right on top of the foil with holes will block the foil with holes...you may not even need the cup... just put an unpoked piece of foil around the coal but leave it room to breathe (don't wrap the coal)let us know how that shit goes

coplinb
Yah, Im gonna say that this isnt going to work out so well just for the fact that your probably not going to get the shisha hot enough with all the layers of foil. In my opinion, if you want a "safer" coal I would use natural coals so you are forgoing the instant lite coating that is on Quick Lites.
Scalliwag
You could take a small round tin and put coal in it, hook an aquarium pump to feed air and a few small vent holes at the top for the air to transfer. Then sit that atop a bowl with possibly no foil under it and let the tin heat the shisha. I would make it in a way it did not slide off the bowl though. It could be more efficient than an electric element. You could even use shitty coals since you would not be directly pulling off of them. Very interesting concept bro. the_cool
Try a glass screen from MNH, I just got mine in today and I am smoking it as I type. The coal sits on glass, which heats the tobacco, there is one big hole in the middle for air flow. It is pretty much the same concept as what you are trying to acheive
chromecarz00
does the screen work? and air has to pass over the charcoal otherwise it wont light
the_cool
It does indeed work, I have only used it once and i still need to keep tinkering with it as the smoke was quite strong, maybe it was the AF bahrani apple (1st time trying it). Im using natural coconut coals, and they go black on the side touching the screen, as it does when using foil so its not an issue. Once is goes black you just ash and flip the coals, put a windcover on for a few mins which will get the coal nice and red again (excpe the side now touching the foil/screen which will eventually go black again!) Hope that made sense :S
Old_Skwl
well soon ima start experimenting with all this stuff I just really dont like the idea of all the carbon monoxide from the charcoal and there must be a better way to heat the tobbacco
Bye bye now have fun
i have a way to make it even safer, throw it out

I notice my coals glow brighter while I am taking a hit. Before I knew anything about managing the heat, I found a mini iron on ebay for like $10(still listed), and though it may work to just set that on top of the bowl, I haven't had the time or motivation to try it though.eBay listing if anyone is interested in trying it. LJ04
does CO have any long-term affects? it binds to your blood cells so O2, can't right? then after a while it goes away and you're good to go again, right?
