NimbleCow
Hey Team,Need some help mastering my Mini Glass Phunnel.. I seem to be burning everything I'll go through my setup and followup with some questions.Main Hardware:Mya DivaMNH Mini Glass Phunnel w/ matching Glass Mod and Glass ScreenGrand Caravan HoseCoals:CocosAccessories:Un-fabulous DIY foil windcoverTobacco:Al Fakher: Golden and non-Golden Line (pretty broad selection)Nakhla Mizo AppleSo I sprinkle tobacco into the bowl with the mod, and push down slightly so that the tobacco doesn't touch the glass screen. If it does I'll be scrubbing for a half hour afterwards Cold tap water about 1" above bottom of downstem.Get 2 Cocos red hot and set them opposite on the glass screen and put on the DIY foil windcover for about 5 minutes to heat it all up. Smoke starts slow and eventually gets pretty good. Once it seems hot I take off the windcover and all seems decent for awhile.Probably move the coals 1/4" or so counter-clockwise at about the 10 minute mark. Once the coals begin to cool I'll ash them, flip them, and replace them 1/4" from where they were previously. Sometime around this point, I may throw the windcover back on to kick things into high gear--only if the clouds are lessening. Sometimes the cover is only on for a minute, sometimes a few minutes. Around here it all falls apart. Usually around 25-30 minutes of this behavior I'll start to see some light smoke coming from the hole in the glass screen. I'll remove the coals and purge a few times and wait. If I really roasted it, smoke will continue to come through the hole in the glass screen for a few minutes. After which, I've never recovered the session and I'm therefore bummed. The problem is that if I don't apply the windcover, I don't always get great clouds. If I do, I end up doing damage.I haven't had great luck using foil as opposed to the glass screen either, but I'd be willing to tinker with it if people have better luck going this route. Also, when I rotate the coals, I usually push them each 1/4". Should I rotate them 45 degrees on the bowl to heat more evenly? Any other questions please ask. Been trying to get a good technique for awhile now but I need some advice.Cheers and Thanks!
Stuie
The way I do is with foil. I have had no problem with it. My guess... ditch the windcover.
SuburbanSmoker
Ive never used a glass screen on an mnh bowl before, but with af, no mod, no wind cover, and foil i throw2 cocos on, usually 3 different sets to give me 2 hrs per bowl.
Arcane
try no windcover and split a coco in half and use two halves instead. however, cocos don't burn as hot as a QL...and i use 2 CH QLs, on my mnh mini. but, yeah...those glass phunnels are tricky. i have two and don't really use them. BigSexyPanda
Try not pushing down on the tobacco at all. Just put less in.
NimbleCow
Thanks guys. I'll go foil tomorrow and report back. Hole pattern reccomendations? I'd instinctively go 3 rows of evenly spaced small holes. If anything else seems fishy in the meantime call it out. Cheers!
Hippo_Master
Make sure you have a lot of opening in your DIY windcover so air can get in and out. Too much heat in the windcover area will kill your coals and burn your baccy!
Voski
Also you don't need to break cocos in half you can just stand them up on the side.
jeremyk
I'm with stuie never used anthing but foil with the phunnel bowl so try it instead of the glass screen and try no wind cover
inino
ditch the screen. Also, if you are putting that little of tobacco to where its not touching the screen with a mod, expect that it will only last 30 minutes or less. thats only like 7-10g of tobacco.if you have other coals use them too, the cocos burn kind of hot for the glass phunnel. BigSexyPanda
I use the mini phunnel with mod and foil and it always goes for a very long time. At least an hour and a half and it could probably go a little longer. I also use cocos, but I stand them straight up, don't lay em flat. I noticed the coals last a lot longer and it keeps everything nice and even. 2-3 cocos straight up works perfect for me, no windcover, maybe just in the beginning to heat it up quickly. Just make sure you rotate the coals and it always works great for me. Just experiment and remember because it's so small, there's a thin line between great smoke and burning smoke. evilded777
Not to threadjack, but a related topic. I picked up one of the Tangiers SM/Med glass screens. Only tried it a few times, never really let it go for too long... always ended up taking it off.Which freaking side is up???One way, it seems to fit well onto the bowl... but the damn coals slide around, because its sloped down towards the edges. Other way, coals stay in place, but I'm afraid the whole damn thing is going to go sliding off the bowl!
inino
the funnel part will be up. in other words the thing that sticks out will be pointing up. and dont worry it wont slide off. once the tobacco starts sticking to it you are good.

NimbleCow
Hey guys,Still tinkering. Nothing 100% yet. Tried a little conservation bowl with double foil and it worked out pretty well. May try double foil on the Mini Glass Phunnel tomorrow. Other bowl I'd like to try with double foil is a standard Mya. Also--if this helps all this tinkering is with Nakhla Mizo Apple. Smells absolutely amazing and when I do get a good cloud the flavor profile of this product is stupendous. Just hoping to get the technique down so I can relax and enjoy. Thanks for all the advice thus far.
