Am I Just A Lightweight, Or Is Something Else Wrong?

Recommended Posts

Right right, so after I set my QT up I was puffing merrily away for about 20 to 25 minutes. The buzz got too strong for me(AF Peach), but that's now what this is about! Somewhere in the twenty to 30 minute range, it felt like the smoke got 'harsh'. Whereas in the first 20 minutes or so, I could easily inhale probably 70% of my lung capacity, I could now do about 15% without it hurting my lungs.

From what I've read it about the coals it seems like too harsh = too hot, and conversely not enough smoke = too cool. Well after messing with the coals and even taking one off(reducing it to one coal on), I found that I had about 1/8th the density of smoke coming out, and it was still a bit painful.

Unless you guys have another idea, I'm going to chalk it up to my lungs being somewhat sensitive to the smoke. That was my first session after getting my own Hookah, and so I was probably taking more hits than any of the times when I was out at a hookah bar. I expect I just went past my (really low) limit. What do you think?

Also out of curiosity, if I want to take a coal off for a short bit, is it kosher to leave it in the hookah's tray, or will that heat up other parts of the hookah that I don't want to?

Well, if you get buzzed from AF... are you also the type of person that gets raging drunk after two beers, or sick to the stomach after 3 hot wings? laugh.gif

I've experienced what you're talking about though, and not 100% what causes it sometimes... sometimes it's apparently nothing. Just take the coals off for a few minutes, let the bowl cool down, and put more coal on.

And in the QT it's not really adviseable to leave coals in the tray for long, the QT tray is just too small and can heat your shit up if you leave coals on it for more than ashing, nothing horrible though. I love my QT, but that is a downside.

yeah it sounds like you had a pretty severe burn started...usually when it gets that bad, I'll just dump the bowl, clean the hookah and start over.

The problem is that crap taints hte juices, making them taste bad and smoke poorly, and also taints the vase water...which in turn taints the hose.

In the end, a severe burn will mess your stuff up.

If you ever run water through two hoses to clean them (not reccomended but sometimes it makes a huge difference), one that has never seen burnt shisha, and one that has seen it semi-regularly, the second hose will have all kinds of really nasty particulate matter in it, while the other one will just color/thicken the hell out of the water.

Definitely sounds like you are still getting used to it, and maybe a little bit of burn with it.

Remember when it starts burning and you take a coal of, sure there is les heat, but if you keep sucking, the stuff will keep burning I find. So let it cool for a bit( stop burning as well) and then continue.

What happend was most likely a combination of your bowl sustaining heat, not very good heat management and a whole lot of user error. The buzz is just due to you not smoking much, the harshness is from doing it all wrong. AF is one of the most forgiving tobaccos ive ever smoked so when you start to get a burn going its not impossible to save the bowl. if your using the mya bowls, those are a tad bit harder to manage. basically an easy fix would be apply less heat to the bowl to start with until it has heated up, if its still not enough heat then add more coal. keep the coals rotating and ashed. you should have a little easier time.

Hah smile.gif I can't get drunk off beers, they make me too sick to my stomach, plus the taste is a bit disgusting blush.gif . I'm a whiskey guy.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Sounds like I just got bit by the heat management. Would it help to prevent that if I pack the bowl a bit less? I probably had about 1/10th to 1/8th of an inch air gap between the foil and shisha. Two coconaras on their broad side (not sideways). Mya bowl with foil.

throw out the mya bowl and get an phunnel or egyptian.

Yea, most ceramic bowls in general kind of suck.

You shouldn't be getting THAT much of a buzz from AF even if you're just starting, make sure your coals are fully lit.

Getting buzzed from AF does happen but I think it isn't really a nicotine buzz it might be some other component of the shisha. Also what kind of coals are you using and are they lit all the way through? You also have to consider you are possibly putting on too much heat and burning out the shisha really fast and then it goes to shit.

sounds like you are ripping your hookah like crazy. this could be burning your tobacco much worse. take it easy, use less coals and dont try and suck tobacco through your pipe. also maybe smoke with more people so you get less smoke time and more oxygen time.

There's no problem with your bowl or your coals. Consider:

1. Check your pack. I generally pack AF pretty loosely to just under the rim.

2. Check your foil. Are you using basic Reynolds? If so, consider using two layers. If you're using heavy duty foil or foil designed especially for hookahs, one layer should be enough.

3. Check your hole pattern. You will hear a lot of people swear by a lot of different hole patterns, but I think the most common one is two concentric rings of holes generally made by a toothpick. The holes are generally spaced ~1/4" apart, and the inner ring is generally placed ~3/8" inside the outer ring.

4. Check your coals. With Coco's, you want to start with the coals assembled in a triangular pattern, hanging off the bowl as much as possible. (It is possible to smoke a MYA bowl with two Coco's but you can smoke much longer before having to start more coals with three. smile.gif) To thicken the smoke, simply nudge the coals inward until you find the sweet spot. Like mentioned earlier, AF is very forgiving so you have quite a bit of wiggle room.

5. Enjoy yourself! Isn't that what it's all about? -Good Luck!

Sounds like you might have burned the tobacco. One it's burned, it will stay harsh even when you take coals off

Well, it could be a little that you're still new to it and you're getting used to it, but for me whenever I burn the tobacco, especially if it's burnt pretty bad, it stays harsh for a while. Even if you take the heat off, it doesn't do much.

not true, depends on the tobacco, certain tobaccos are forgiving and even if it burns it can recover easily.

Some other brands ... not so much
