Giant Ninja Robot
I FINALLY got a digital camera. Not only will I be able to capture my personal life better, but I can now upload pics and movies to this here site that I love so much! The catch is that the memory card it came with is trash, so I need a bigger card and since my computer is so old I need a card reader as well to circumvent installing software that ME wont read (it's a really old michine). Here's the camhttp://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default...powershot+sd790I was told that newegg.com has amazing prices and it really does. Here's what was reccomended to get from them for a card readerhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820401007look any good? If not PLEASE GIMME SOME RECCOMENDATIONS!!!I also need a good amount of memory but have no clue what I'm looking for as I'm new to digital photography. I'd really like to order today.ANY info and suggestions are welcome, thanks.
*HOT&SMOKING*
I would reckon at getting the highest amount of memory(as it is quite cheap lately from what I have seen) available for SD cards which is atm about 16 gig's in south africa, could probably find more in america because the technology might be better. But it all depends on how many pic's you want to take, on an 8 gig card you could probably get over a 1000 pic's...so based on that buy what you need size wise...Hope that helps!-H&S
Giant Ninja Robot
it does help thanks! I'm thinking 1000-2000 pics would be perfect. Also what is the difference between an SD card and others? Just smaller for compact cams?
Bye bye now have fun
over 4 gigs is a waste. also dont be fooled my megapixels, the ccd size (bigger is better) and quality are way more important. also the lense quality is important. i remember a few years ago panasonics lumix's has one of the best lenses for a non slr camera. Giant Ninja Robot
I have no idea what almost any of that means I are noob.ccd?slr?i read up on what i got and it was rated fairly high for a family use type cam which is what I'll be using it for by consumer reports and a couple camera sites. But thanks for the info, I'll grab a 4gig and save 8 bucks. *HOT&SMOKING*
QUOTE (giant ninja robot @ Apr 8 2009, 08:06 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>it does help thanks! I'm thinking 1000-2000 pics would be perfect. Also what is the difference between an SD card and others? Just smaller for compact cams?Yeah the SD is just the size mainly, you still get things like micro SD which I have for my cellphone, ill check the link but I wrote about SD, because I think the camera you bought uses SD. But also you said it came with a memory card, it usually says quite boldly on the card SD or something..-H&S
Giant Ninja Robot
these cards have free shipping, are they compatible and which brand is higher quality?http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820134475http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820134858If they work I'd be cool with either one...lemme know oh mighty technologically advanced ones. Giant Ninja Robot
thanks again H&S! yeah it says SD on the card so I guess that the above are compatible, awesome. Since the Kingston got great reviews for use with a Canon, I'll get that one.Still wondering about the card reader.
*HOT&SMOKING*
According to the camera specs, it supports SDHC (type of memory card), and both the cards you posted are exactly that, it seems the cheaper one ( 8.89) specifically says it has quite a long warranty, and has a faster transfer speed....I would say go with either, but the cheaper one does sound a little bit better...and faster..-H&S**Edit: I'll look into the card reader now... Giant Ninja Robot
option 1 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E168201990182 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E168201620203 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820208458 - so far the best reviews4 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820134753 LOOKS LIKE THE WINNER#4 is the same brand as the card I want to get, has free shipping on it also like the card, and gets great reviews. With the free shipping taken into account i think id rather get this one than the original card. better to spend an extra 5 bucks or so than to risk a card that might suck since the rest of that brand has gotten really shitty reviews.THANKS A WHOLE BUNCH FOR THE HELP AND GUIDANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Sincerely appreciated
*HOT&SMOKING*
yeah the 4th one is your best bet I rate...also with it being kingston is a plus, as they are a great brand..No worries, I did not mind helping at all...-H&S
Tati
I guess this might be a noob question, but what do you need a card reader for?I have a very similar camera, and I plug it into my comp, it uploads the pictures, and then i can either delete them from the camera, or keep them on there. The only time I take out my memory card is when I want to switch between 1g to 2g card. Giant Ninja Robot
I have a VERY old computer Tati, my dear. Since it run's windows ME it isn't compatible with the software the camera came with. Therefore I need a loophole to upload pictures and loading them straight to my computer without extra steps is the way to do that, hence - card reader. Also I was told in chat yesterday that it will load immesurably faster with an external reader as opposed to loading straight from the camera. Tati
That makes sense. Thanks Mark!
Bye bye now have fun
holy jesus windows me? i doubt the card reader will work with windows me. also plugging in your camera should make it show up as a mass storage device. so if you can plug in an ipod, or usb thumbdrive you should be fine
Giant Ninja Robot
too late already ordered them, but since the card reader is supposed to be faster and we needed the card anyway no big deal.yeah we're looking into a new computer right now. tinyj316
Mark, your next investment should be a cheap computer... CompUSA, Newegg, TigerDIRECT, etc. all have some pretty low cost notebooks and desktops on a fairly consistent basis... conversely, you could always check out Oakland University's "garage sales" where they blow out their old lab computers on the cheap...
